BBC pay reveal

What I find obscene is tossers like Shearer, Lineker, Winkleman, Evans et al getting fortunes, whilst people that do something worthwhile like Doctors, Surgeons, Cancer Specialists etc etc are not even in the same league.

Someone needs to reset the benchmark.

Who gets all the money in sport and entertainment then?

I'd say it was the bloke who holds the Guinness world record for the most people attending a stand up tour ever, in the world. That genius.
Jeff Dunham then? Here's a video of his genius btw.

But be careful what you say, because the logical extension of your argument is that we have to admit that Bono is a genius, since U2 have the biggest ever music tour. And his ego can barely handle any more praise.

As for the gender balance, that is most likely a product of the sexism in society in general. The reality is that fewer people will watch a show hosted by a woman. There was even an interview with the children's laureate a few weeks ago who said that if she writes a book with a female lead character, it won't sell as many copies, because while girls will read books with a male lead, boys won't read books with a female lead (or perhaps parents won't buy books for a boy with a female lead). It is changing though, with some massive hits being hosted by women, like Bake Off and Strictly. But I think it will be quite a few years before it's not a newsworthy point to have even an equal number of women on a TV show.

That sounds likely to me.
I read that some shows like Newsnight have a scale based on how many you've presented.
I don't know what the effect on mothers having a career break is, but presumably that affects some, including the Newsnight example.

The papers appear to be reporting it in a less than consistent manner, but several proprietors want to bash the BBC, that's possibly not a surprise.

Lots about this in the news today - particularly on 5Live ironically. You can just see next years headlines -

"uproar as BBC awards massive pay rises to female talent "

They can't win either way. BBC aside I wonder how many of those papers pontificating on this have a gender balance in their own pay structures that they are proud of?

Apparently, many female employees have written to the director about the vast pay differentials between
themselves and the men, and want it addressed. If they reduce the blokes pay to the levels of the women's
then there will be true equality, we mugs who are forced to pay for their wages will get a far better return
for our money, The BBC's salary bill will be greatly reduced and the female staff can't complain.

The comments 'if you take away Linekar people will still watch' misses the point.
You take away a good star name host and replace it with someone average the show takes a backward step, whilst viewing figures may remain high - you can then say ... why do they need to pay all that money for a fancy studio .. people would still watch MOTD if it was hosted from a office room ... why do they to pay all the different commentators for each game on a highlights show ? Just use the same one .. eventually your going to diminish the show.

People would still watch Games Of Thrones if it was black and white.

The issue here, grossly exaggerated wages aside for all of them is that even the men have huge differences between them for the same job so how the women think they will ever get parity is beyond me to be honest?

Evans gets over £2M for a radio show so do all the other men and women now say we want the same for hosting a show?

never going to happen is it?
