Benidorm (The place, not the TV show)

I'm flying out to Benidorm for a week on Sunday, on a "family" holiday with my son and my ex, staying with her Mum who lives out there. I'm gonna be honest with you, Benidorm seems like my idea of hell. High rise apartments as far as the eye can see, "english" bars and cafes, thousands upon thousands of brit tourists crammed like sardines on a strip of sand. Just isn't my idea of what a foreign holiday should be like. If my lad hadn't of asked me to go, I don't think I'd be going.

So, the question to my fellow 'mooners is am I doing Benidorm a disservice in my assumptions above? Is it really as bad as I'm fearing? Also, and probably more importantly, what things are there to do (Sticky Vicky isn't going to be on my itinerary, so I'll save you the bother there)? Any particular areas I should visit? I know the Old Town is supposed to be worth a wander. Anything in the surrounding area? (won't be driving so limited to public transport).

Any and all advice is appreciated. Cheers :)

The old town isn't bad. However you should go to Calpe and Altea which are both nearby. A lot lot nicer.
PS if you need recommendations for bars/restaurants in either of those towns let me know as I go every year.

Altea looks nice, lots of old streets and alleyways. Much more of a traditional feel I suppose? And I notice you can the train/tram there. Any idea how long the journey would be?

Yeah mate, Altea is gorgeous. Very beautiful. Coach shouldn't be longer than 20 mins. Not sure if the tram goes there but I think it does! Calpe old town is great too, some amazing restaurants and less English people!

Went to Benidorm for two weeks with Mrs Jockstrap about twenty five years ago, and stayed in a hotel in the old town for two weeks, up towards the bullring.

We both thought it was OK but a bit quiet, until two days before we were due to come home, then we found out there was a new part, which was heaving....

lol!

Been a few times since....love it.

Hire a jeep and go here...awesome:-

Unfortunately the Limon express has now finished, that was a good day out if you liked getting pissed. (Google it)

This is a good night out, if you don't mind going to a castle made of breeze block.

Just been looking at pics online. Looks really picturesque. Trouble is, I'm not going to be driving. Anyone know if there are any buses that head up there? Do NOT want to go on a tour bus type thing though...

No buses I'm afraid mate! The coastal towns are all linked but getting anywhere which is inland is tricky.
