Well, among other things, he held what I think was up to that time the largest reception in White House history for returning POWs from Vietnam, as opposed to telling the most heroic among them that he preferred soldiers that weren't captured.

I think he might also have made an historic visit to Beijing and signed the SALT treaty with the Soviets instead of escalating the possibility of nuclear war with one of those two nations' pissant satellites.

Sadly this follows a pattern of ludicrous behaviour in relation to people either killed or captured in action. The treatment of the Khan family, the comments to John McCain and telling the press to ask Gen Kelly about the death of his son are just the examples I can think of.
All this from a despicable cowardly moron who managed to get 5 draft deferrals so he wouldn't have to serve in Vietnam.
It's just another example of his utter hypocrisy and insensitivity but certainly not a surprise.
