I'm no cynic said:This line-up is really 4-4-2 as it contains two of the four strikers that you allude to. Balotelli was neither a midfielder or a wide man.
It's really not. The one thing that gave us was fluidity as Silva, Balotelli and Aguero would all be able to move around, so when Balotelli came in to a strikers position, Aguero could go out left. And even if Balo was a CF by trade, he would give us width out left even if it wasn't as a winger or wide midfielder. More like an old fashioned inside forward I guess.
The other factor in that team is Yaya becomes the second striker and allows us to have two midfielders behind him. This worked so well for so long I really have no idea why we changed from it. Well I do, it was because we had Tevez and Dzeko and in this system they would only really play when Aguero was injured
