James Bond Films. Are They All That?

I was brought up with them and remember going to the Odeon in Bury in 1966ish to watch the double header of Thunderball and Goldfinger.

At that time life was pretty grim. I can remember my late father walking to Bolton and back from Ramsbottom to try and get a job.

So the Bond films brought a little bit of escapism to life. Also back then no-one went abroad and the Bond films were always filmed in exotic locations. I've always enjoyed them apart from a couple of Roger Moore ones in the late 1980's.

I believe first day of filming is this weekend and can't wait for it to come out. I think Craig is an excellent Bond and portrays the character very well according to the novels which are dark and gritty.

Can't wait for it to come out next year.
Might go and see this one when it comes out and try to catch Skyfall after the comments on here, I gave up when Roger Moore took over

I've enjoyed all Craigs Bond movies. Folk say they are ripping off Bourne however if folk read the books all the film makers have done is return to the books and portrayed him as a troubled individual who whilst is good at his job ie of being an assassin actually doesn't particularly like killing.

Similar story here, every time the new Bond would come out, mum would load us on the bus and I loved them all even the Moore ones (Jane Seymour in Live and let die drove me nuts as a kid)
Watched a great documentary on Netflix the other day about the Bond series, well worth a watch, had interviews with all the Bonds except Sean Connery

Ah, Jane Seymour, one of my all time favourite Bond girls. Monica Bellucci has already been cast for "Spectre", so that's another favourite right there.

Agreed. Casino Royale was pretty close to the book throughout. The torture scene was exactly as written for one thing, Bond films became silly escapism, it's not how they were visualised by Fleming.

So much of it is timing. Dalton's Bond was gritty and downright nasty. Audiences hated it and wanted the silly Bond. The Daniel Craig version just captured the zeitgeist. Some of the Bourne films were pretty stupid in parts. The idea the CIA kill people in London with impunity was laughable, the Security Service would be more likely to take them out before they did it.

Yeah they are all that. 2 of the last 3 Bonds have been some of the best they've done. Skyfall was very good, Goldfinger was my favourite until Casino Royale a few years back, easily the best, has everything in it, can't believe they went from that to such a piss poor film in Quatum of Solace.

Roger Moore killed it off for me, as those films, and his acting in particular, were embarrassingly bad. The Daniel Craig ones have been quite good, probably because they've gone down the Bourne route.

Seriously, Connery owned it

There hasnt been one as believable or good in every way since him, Craig just isnt the screen presence Sean was, Brosnan too weak and pissy, Moore was shite and a B actor and yeas, weak

Its a pity the whole think wasnt scrapped when Sean quit, as everybody after him was gonna be a let down.

a bit like some Russell Brand trying to be Basil Fawlty

Just my opinion

They range from great to terrible. Brosnan was my favourite Bond, but he got given some absolutely fucking woeful films to do later on, after the ridiculously good Goldeneye. Daniel Craig is good, but again it's entirely dependant on the film. Casino Royal is fantastic, but the one after was utter shite, then Skyfall was decent. Roger Moore's are the only ones I don't like, as I find the man creepy as fuck and most of his films are really brain dead. I really liked Timothy Dalton, I thought he was unlucky not to get more films, but I think his gritty, violent films were maybe too big a jump from the ridiculisuly camp Moore films.
