Captaining Germany against England tomorrow as a farewell, final cap. I'm surprised how highly thought of he is over there, He earned a lot of his caps during Germany's transition period when they were not great. 3rd all-time leading scorer for them.

That's Sane on the bench then

One of those rare players who always seemed to play better for country than club, but 130 caps is impressive for any nation, let alone Germany.

It's quite insane looking at his record for country over his clubs.

Just goes to show that you don't necessarily have to be a world beater at club level to succeed at international level.

Since 2012 he always is part of the team put not in the starting formation - and his last 30 caps came as substitute or in friendlies. In the last years he was more important for the team chemistry etc. than as a player.

He started to get professional in Germany in a time where we rarely had talents - if he would start today he probably would not even get a chance to get into the national team.

That's a staggering amount of caps, especially when you consider his age. I'm aware Bayern fans don't love him, but he's had a great career.

Why should Bayern fans not like him? Because he was not good enough for Bayern? No. But he somehow is a fun figure or a figure to make fun of, too...
