POLICE are hunting a premiership footballer for his alleged involvement in a hit and run incident in Hale.
Cyclist Rob Lockhart was riding his bike along Victoria Road at around 5.45pm, on September 5, when he was involved in a collision with a matt black Audi Q7.
It is alleged that when Mr Lockhart asked the driver to exchange insurance details, he refused and when Mr Lockhart then tried to take a picture of the Audi’s registration number, the driver said: “Good luck finding me on foreign plates.”
But others at the scene did take a picture of the car, which Mr Lockhart posted on Twitter in an attempt to trace the driver.
Hundreds of people retweeted the image, including six time Olympic gold medalist, Sir Chris Hoy, and the name of one premiership footballer was repeatedly linked to the incident.
The footballer is thought to be from a North West club.
A police spokesman said enquiries to both trace the driver and establish the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.
Inspector Laura Burgess, of South Trafford INPT, said: “The driver failed to stop at the scene and we are making efforts to identify, trace and speak to him.
“Members of the public who witnessed what happened have also helped us and we are pursuing these leads.
“Any information we receive that may help will be acted upon.”
Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7530 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

-- Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:59 am --

Actually, he's been in the UK too long to have a foreign registered car still :(
