When you see Bernardo and Gundogan stop, waiting for the whistle to be blown, you realise it is a foul, something so obvious that in Portugal, France, Germany, heavens anywhere, it would instinctively be a free kick. It would be given as a foul 100/100 times in European competitions, but away to West Brom on a Wednesday night it's somehow deemed permissible to hack and pull players back; this is England, this is a cup tie, physicality is something to be prized. And that, illogical and inconsistent refereeing, is one of the major reasons why the technical quality of English players has remained stunted for so long; prizing physicality will never amount to prizes.
