The National Health Service

So Americans are jumping up and down about Obama's plans to bring in a healthcare plan similar to our own NHS. They are likening his proposals to "Soviet Russia" down in redneck territory. Seems that people who can't afford healthcare getting it courtesy of the state goes right against the grain in the land of the free. Free to die unnecessarily if you fall ill but don't have the $$ to pay for the treatment? That's freedom American style, folks.

We often knock this country and with justification, but for me the creation of the NHS by the Labour Government in 1948 is the one thing of which I am most proud - the true mark of a civilised and compassionate society. Money can buy you material luxury, and that's why we work hard, for that house, car, holiday etc. Education and healthcare are basic needs and should not be treated in the same way. I pity those people in third world countries such as the US where such high standards can only be dreamed of.
hear hear mr ducks.im just about to mail some of my redneck chums and tell them the truth.its not that americans dont want healthcare, its the big healthcare companies who make billions who dont want it

The campaigns against reform are being paid for by the healthcare insurance companies

I'm not too clued up with matters of the US and all that. I understand that we pay taxes and that the NHS is free due to that (is that right?). If that is the case, where is the mony from US taxpayers going? I realise this brings nothing to the debate I am just curious.

US companies "working" on benefitting Iraq and Afghanistan

Of course! They have to win a war on something soon. Cheers, TB.

There was a very interesting debate on this yesterday on 5Live.
As someone pointed out, if a person wants to contribute to private healthcare why isn't this tax deductable?
Another caller said his wife was taken ill in the U.S and their travel insurance didn't cover them.
Doctors in America have taken the "hippocratic oath" so they cannot and will not refuse anyone medical treatment, although you will be billed.
Anyway this bloke said his wife was in hospital for three days and undertook numerous tests and CT scans. The doctors in America sent him his wife's file so he could present this to his own doctor back in the UK. His own doctor was astounded with what he was presented with. He said that the treatment, tests and results in America that had taken three days to achieve would have taken at least 18 months to perform in the NHS.
How much was he billed?............... £400
It's a choice isn't it, you use the NHS and have to "wait your turn" or you go private and get things done quicker, but have to pay.

What if you don't have £400 (or the equivalent amount in dollars), How does that currently work in the US?

Perhaps you come to an agreement to pay them back a certain amount per month. The honest answer is, "I don't know". But as was stated U.S doctors will not refuse treatment to anyone.
I personally believe that America is at one extreme and we're at the other. It's almost that if anyone in politics criticises the NHS they'll be lynched, it's just something you don't do.
You could throw another couple of billion a year at the NHS and it'd still not be enough, it's just a bottomless pit.
Somewhere along the line there has to be a balance between Private and public healthcare.

There are differing degrees of healthcare insurance in the US. At least one NY hospital, NYU, refuses to take patients who use Medicaid, the cover for those who are poorest.

^this^

The NHS is something of a black hole these days, and it could be managed far more effectively and efficiently - doesn't mean I won't want it there.

i find it interesting how they equate collective public funding for healthcare to socialism. do they consider the fire service socialist? do they consider the police socialist? both public services paid for through collective taxation.

Many Americans have a very disparaging view of anything British and always have had.
They seem to think that we're a bunch of dithering eccentrics with wonky teeth who lie shivering in our beds at night praying that we won't get raped and robbed 3 times a week.

How dare they stereotype us like that, the fat stupid bastards.
