It's not mocking the dead so much as making distasteful puns in the immediacy of a news event.
It's been happening since before we were born and will continue after we ourselves are in the ground. It's just that these days it appears to have gained more prominence due to social network sites and forums etc whereas previously it was confined to pubs and work places.
