Pizza

Should always add anchovies, forget that it's fish, enhances the flavour of most things!

On recommendation,I took an ex to 'Al Fresco' in Delph nr Oldham a few years ago. Nice ambiance about the place, seemed authentic. I ordered a simple spag bol expecting fresh home made Italian pasta.

I said to the ex i wasn't happy and I called the waitress over.

"Excuse me, Is this pasta home made as it tastes like packet".... " one moment sir I'll ask the chef"....... "Sorry sir it is packet pasta".
"Why are you claiming to be an Italian restaurant, when you are selling packet pasta for a small fortune?"..... "Sorry but we haven't. had any complaints on our pasta before".

"Are any of you from Italy?"..... "Err no(dopey accent) we're all from Oldham"....
If by "packet" they mean dried pasta, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

If making pasta dishes at home, you can make egg pasta yourself dead easy, but if you can't be arsed then decent dried pasta is just fine. And if you need a hard, semolina-based pasta (like spaghetti or penne for example) you absolutely SHOULD use dried, since its very difficult/impossible to make at home.

Shop bought "fresh" stuff sold chilled in bags is to be avoided at all costs; it is absolute garbage. You get a MUCH better finished dish with dried pasta.

Proper itallian pizza or New York pizza is the best hands down. I try not to spoil it with too many toppings so usually just go for a margherita. If im feeling fancy i go for the Napoletana (anhovies, capers, olives).

My main gripe about take aways over here is the pizza, they are horrible. you cant find a proper pizza anywhere

Never even heard of a new york pizza. Sure you don't mean Chicago?

Deep dish? Its good stuff, but that isnt pizza!
Saying that though, when i was in Chicago everyone seemed to be eating pizza with a really thin crust cut into little squares. I was told that's the actual Chicago pizza, not deep dish

I always buy good quality dried packet pasta, and i agree it is better than "fresh" packet stuff. Homemade Italian pasta in Italy is best I've had though.

On its menu the local takeaway lists something called a 'London Pizza'.

I'm informed that this is literally a chip pizza. A cheese and tomato pizza with chips on it.

Not shaped like Tower Bridge or featuring the Queen's head. Just a pizza with chips on it. £4.50.

Id say i was shocked, but they have chips with their full english down there dont they. If that was a true London pizza though it should be £14.50

Papas johns is better and cheaper than dominos.
Eeew no fucking way.
Eat there once (the one at St. Peter's Square)
And i developed severe food poisoning (salmonella)
Which lead me to collapse whilst waiting for a tram home, and I was rushed to the Hospital.

Would never eat at Papa John's ever again.

As for their rivals (Dominos)
It's overpriced yet has on occasions been nice (considering its a chain)
Haven't bought Domino's for years now though due to the rip off price and one occasion spending £15 on a pizza for it only to be burnt and cold :/

Now I tend to go to restaurants which specialise in Pizza, and find myself spending similar money as I would at a Domino's.

Croma in Prestwich, and Double Zero Neapolitan in Chorlton

According to a YouGov survey Mushroom is the UKs favourite pizza topping.... Where did they do this survey?! Mushroom was first, then ham, then peppers.... weirdos.

Nicest pizza I ever had was from a small takeaway in Thornton Heath, Sarf London. I only wanted something to fill me up after a long day of travelling and couldn't believe how nice it was.

Dominoes is alright but I prefer Papa Johns, I like lots of cheese plus extra cheese and then some chicken and that will do me.

I live in Bedford which has a large Italian population and so good pizza is easy to come by. The oddest sight is probably the Pizza Express; you look at it among all the authentic family-run Neapolitan pizzerias and bakeries and just wonder why they bothered sticking a pizza chain restaurant in this of all towns.

I love a capricciosa/valentino (ham, mushroom, olive) and a fiorentina (spinach with an egg on top), but really if the pizza is well-made and of good quality then you can't really beat a margherita. There's a little bakery near where I live that supplies all the restaurants and markets with bread during the day, and then makes pizzas in the evening, and their margherita is so good that putting toppings on it just spoils it.

I used to travel to Naples a lot and one time my friends there took me to what is considered the best pizzeria in Naples. One thing that struck me was that their calzone - which in this country is usually just a pizza folded over - was fried. Bloody delicious it was, too.
