It's Quiet - a new dawn

I think Kolarov will be a back up central defender now.

Ever since the new year Kolarov has barely played if played at all at left back as when he hasn't hasn't been playing as a central defender he has been on the bench.

For me, the Leicester away game made up Pep's mind regarding playing Aleks at left back ever again.

I'd prefer it if he barely played.

so will any moves for certain players be dependent on getting champions league? or will pep be a big enough draw?

I personally want to see a top class experienced central defender come in and partner Stones next season.

John needs an experienced leader to learn from and the defence needs a general running it. Going into next season with two young lads at central defence as well as at full back we are asking for clangers to happen if you ask me.

Wow two examples. I retract my comment.
Well if you want more, Barzagli, Pepe, Carvalho, Luisao, Godin, Lucio, Di Natale, Aduriz, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Lahm, Robben, Milito and we could go on, all played some of their best football in their 30's ;-)

Although generally you're right, i'd be wary spending big money on someone approaching 30, you never quite know when their performance levels might drop off a cliff.

In fact there are about 60 to 70 over 30 Centrebacks starting across Europe's top 5 leagues

In fact there are about 85 starting CBS above the age of 30 across the top 5 leagues. So as a percentage, yes its the most friendly position for older players. But o think intuitively it is harder to succeed in England than say Italy.

But my honest real issue with Bonnuci is that there are better players for way cheaper. This is more of a name recognition 'want' than anything else.

I think Bonucci is not only one of the best defenders in the business but also one of the great defensive leaders and ball players.

Imagine what Stones could learn.

This is a fallacy that keeps getting repeated. John Stones is the leader of that defense and probably the team come next season, no new defender is going to change that. Leadership is almost always a function of personality mixed with knowledge and experience " of the system."

People often ignore the part in quote. We have a leader in waiting. And his leadership probably starts in earnest next season.

He is a leader and captain in the waiting but I still think he needs a top class experienced player next to him to learn from and guide him.

Those really don't exist. Pique, Masherano, Boateng, Hummels, and maybe Badstuber at a syretch. That's probably the breathe of the list of players who can truly add value outside of their simple individual talent to Stones right now.

We are not getting any of those guys. Anyone else, will be coming in to learn from John Stones. Experience in this system and adaptation to this league all favor John Stones over any import. So import wise, talent should be the only factor being seriously considered.

No there aren't. There's about 5 better than him atm max

Wouldn't want Bonucci, or any Italian defender tbh. Not convinced the Serie A style of defending translates to other leagues, least of all England. Getting an old centerback who would have to spend time adjusting to a new league while dealing with their own physical deterioration is an accident waiting to happen. As for Stones learning from him, he'd probably have as much to learn from Stones as Stones does from him

Jonathan Tah is still the best young CB i've seen this season, wish we were being linked to him more.

Big, fast, really physical and aggressive defender, but not reckless or a gambler. Good enough on the ball for Pep and 21.

Stones still lacks some aggression and while I think he'll develop it, someone like Tah who will dominate centre forwards the way Kompany used to (or Mangala did on his good days) would make me feel more comfortable about our defence.

If there were no budgetary restrictions then have a go at Bonucci.

But as is, you have to outbid Chelsea who would make more sense for him as a destination for multiple reasons anyway. Plus the inevitable saga as you get with all Italian clubs.

Just seems like too many other needs to fill to go blowing so much money on that guy. Want an Italian player that doesn't "quite" fit Pep's way and pay all the money in the world for him? That monster Donnarumma for me if so.

He'll probably end up at Bayern at some time with a cheap price, just like Sule.
