On the Big Question on the BBC at this moment Nicky Campbell has just quoted stats that show 33% of those questioned did say immigration was their number one motive to vote leave.

How's that for up to date reporting?

Now back to Magicpole in the studio..............

Did they ask all 17+m leave voters or just people from Burnley

I absolutely wish to see immigration actively controlled to ensure that we attract the numbers and skills we most need to support our economy etc. That does not make me a racist

The Remain use of the word racist - I do not mean by you at all - is itself quite shocking. I could even say ignorant if that word had not already been 'bags' for remain use

Strikes me you won't be happy until someone actually calls you a racist.

Yes you can want immigration control without being racist, but what kind of immigration control will it be?

Do you imagine a post Brexit UK where there is a shortage of skills/labour and businesses want to bring it in off the shelf from abroad, cheap and already trained (at no cost to them) and a benign government tells those businesses..... "No, you've got to train up those lads and lasses on the local council estate at your cost to fill that skills gap!"

Yeah, that's going to happen.

It really drives you nuts that the horses won't drink.

No - it is what it is. There will always be some of the herd that will not have the wit to do what is right for them at a given point in time.

It seems only commonsense that if you are a Remainer then in June 2016 you vote to Remain - if you are a Remainer that wishes the best for the UK in the future then you get behind the UK in the 2017 - 2019 negotiating period.

Commonsense perhaps, but not all UK citizens have commonsense and a number would rather see the UK struggle to the benefit of the EU

As I say - it is what it is

Im sure seasonal work visas for a set period of time are not beyond the wit and wisdom of the government.
They shouldnt be, no. Except according to the farmers they have requested a scheme is developed this year and trialled 2018 so it's in place and working for 2019. They say it needs to be work straight away or crops will rot. So far the government have refused to entertain the plan saying it isnt needed until 2019. Short sightedness already setting in.

What is also needed in the farming industry and has to be led by our supermarkets is fair prices for quality goods. Supermarkets can not be allowed to basically steal the stuff from the farmer to maximise profit and the farmer then has to pay a decent wage to staff used.

Agreed, especially milk, but thats another conversation.

It is and it isnt. Low paid migrant labour in now the given in farming due to the fine and often non existent margins driven by supermarkets and yes, its nice to have cheap food but as consumers we have to be prepared to play a little more and the farming sector boosted by the extra revenue has to then pay a fair wage.

There is no reason why we have to bring in any unskilled labour to do what we could well do ourselves.

I do agree with you, and dont mind paying a fair price. Whether we could find enough people to do the work even with decent wages I'm not sure.

Well surely whilst we remain in the EU we must accept free movement and would not be allowed by our EU masters to operate controls this year?

Are we just looking for reasons to criticise the UK?

Well I mentioned the thick and racist words as the proven path that you and other Remainers take when looking foolish in debating is to throw insults.
You called me thick and racist.
No I didn't - you said I did.
Well, I thought I'd save time because you'd do it eventually.
Does that not sound a little bit thick?

Farmers might not need immigrant labour. They'll just move the equipment to eastern Europe and grow the crops there. (Seriously - listeners to Farming Today will have heard all this. There are no locals wanting to do the work.)

Skills based.

Its not difficult.

The skill to pick and pack fruit and veg on our farms is the most urgent probably.

Not talking specifically about fruit picking here, but there should also be evidence that reasonable efforts have been made to recruit and train locally.

I'm not anti-employer by any means but some are short termist and self-focused.

That ties in with my views on the farming industry and the way Supermarkets are ensuring its a race to the bottom wage wise.

Other than for financial gain and greed, there is zero need to bring workers in from anywhere else on this globe of ours to pick our own crops, zero.
