yes those 2 at the top cost a bit. but the vast majority of players in there team, pretty much there best players, didn't cost that much. if theres a world class player available yea we should spend big and go for him, but we need to start looking at smarter buys instead of spending big money all the time. it just makes more sense
Ok but remember the time of those buys. The prices for Soldado and Lamela were sizeable at the time.

The good buys there are the exceptions not the rule.
Spurs have patience with the young players. They will accept mediocre seasons. They had to wait a long time for Rose and Walker to become good.
I have a feeling guardiola is better at handling Young players. Sterling was shit last season and is still making poor decisions, but he seems to be improving Month after month. Stones and sane hasnt been great all season but are given the opportunity to grow. Thank god pep is smarter than most on here, we would probably have sold them all cheaply by now.

Selling clubs know we have more money than Spurs/Lcfc...so the price goes up ...we can't pretend to be on a low budget

Don't under estimate the power of guardiola in attracting young players
Sane gundogan Jesus debruyne and sterling stones are his buys
Add a few more defensive buys this year and this team could be challenging for ten years
People want to play for him as he is the best
Mourinho and conte will be good for two or three years but then comes another re build especially if costa and hazard leave
City Wont need that

People always point to Rose, Walker and Kane.

If we had those 3 players they'd be getting torn to shreds on here.

Rose was shit until he was 25. He was still on loan at relegation candidates Sunderland at 23. Compare him to someone like 20 year old Denayer, who people have already written off as shit, and don't want him anywhere near the squad next summer - a lot of the time because apparently "if they're getting relegated he can't be doing well" or "he wouldn't still be on loan if he was up to it" etc.

Kane couldn't get a game in the championship at 22, compare him to Patrick Roberts, who is 2 years younger, has Champions League experience and people are still unimpressed with, most don't think he'll make the grade.

This fanbase doesn't have the patience to accept that players bought in their late teens/early 20's might not be world beaters right away when they're playing on loan, god forbid what they'd do if the players were making their mistakes on the pitch like the Spurs fullbacks got to do for years before Pochettino.

You only need to look at the Iheanacho thread lately to see that.

Excellent post Dom.

Everyone above cost less than 15 million. That's a likely starting 11. Outside of Son. They often screw up their expensive buys;

Lamela, Jansen, and the Spanish striker that got sent back. Perhaps they've learnt something. Buy talent, not hype.

And also stay patient. 2 things we don't do very well. That said we win trophies and they haven't done that too well either ;p

I agree and I guess you could argue that when you have money you become more relaxed and don't scrutinise every possibility of any potential signing. Spurs are also very much a product of the years spent together and system in place, many players in that squad wouldn't cut it elsewhere I feel. Yep but us having more money means we will bag a few hits with the money spent.

Good post mate.

It seems the club doesn't lack anything but patient on young players.

How can you possibly say an 18yr old in the french league will be the best in world football, talk about getting carried away
4 mins in & he bags another in the Champions League & not the French league ;)

I can say what I want coz I know what I'm talking about & this kid is far better than anything I've seen in any League bar Jesus

so your long term answer is to just spend a bucket load of cash every year. surely that can't be answer all the time. we need to stop beign so reliant on it.
Where have I said that????

What I have said without what has been spent we would have won fuck all, it's cost 1b to get on the competing with Barcelona etc stage.

I expect at least 1 more mega money transfer because FFP fucked us over so we are still playing catch up but after this year I expect the spending to be 1/3 of what gets spent this Summer

Disagree. He could regularly start for some of the teams in the top 8 if given confidence and put in a system that play's his strengths. I could see him regularly starting for Southampton, West Brom or Everton if they sell Lukaku.
Bollocks not good enough back to goal, touch not good enough, Everton will be after experience & they have 2 good kiddof there own. West Brom wouldn't suit him PULIS. I can see him maybe in a Southampton squad but never starting week in week out.

He will go to Italy or France

Everyone gassing over Mbappe. Lemar is a fucking beast in the making. Iniesta on steroids

If we do get Benjamin Mendy I could see him as a left back, left sided CB or left side CB in a 3 at the back. Basically a better version of Kolarov.

Dortmund's Dembele just made a great run & cross for Dortmund goal. Are we linked with this guy at all?

If we're looking for a winger this could be the guy.

Not exactly. I think we can begin to make few additions to the team every season whilst grafting in exceptional academy talent only when we are 'settled'. Our major problem over years has been mainly piss poor buying. I mean you can count on one hand how many positions we have improved since the first trophy win such that we find ourselves in a position where a lot of positions require massive improvement and a there are also a number of positions where we can do with a change despite spending loads. In such circumstances (as highlighted above) you usually don't look to your academy to bail you out but you make your way into the market. Also we can surely learn a lot from Spurs but we must recognise that they can afford to make a lot of gambles that we cannot make as the very best is what we yearn to have. I trust that Pep will begin to set us on the right path but let's not kid ourselves, we may have to spend a lot this transfer window. Let's see where that'll take us in the coming season
