Explosion at MEN Arena/Victoria Station

Sidebar chaps - any recommendations where I can get either a I heart MCR car window/bumper sticker or a Manchester Bee car window/bumper sticker - fleabay only seems to be offering up chancers from everywhere else in the country - I'd like to make sure at least some the ca$h I spend goes to the victims fund!

Ask these guys....

no, just what's been said within them. Need agreements on what will/won't be preached, venues that don't comply are shut down and we need to recruit far more undercovers and moderate members of the local community to shop more extremist members and from the ground up make sure the organisational structures are filled with moderates and outward thinkers. Need to subvert the radicalists and gradually ostracise them from their own communities.
I was thinking about whether the idea of us planting long-term undercovers within suspect communities was feasible. Maybe even faux radicals, like a honeypot tactic to unearth those interested to begin with. It helped us get info from the IRA.

Not a question of red tape. The emergency services had no idea if there were other explosive devices at the scene when they arrived. The police & paramedics were told it wasn't safe and that it was up to them if they went in but they all went in regardless. The fire brigade were ordered to stay out until it was confirmed safe. Normally if paramedics are sent to a scene that's suspected to be unsafe they would wait until the police arrived and went in with them. So strictly speaking the fire brigade were right but they should have been given the choice given the nature of the incident.
Spot on PB, we weren't even given the choice, for fucks sake a homeless man did more than we did, give that man a medal a free apartment in Manchester for life and hopefully a step up to a normal life, I'd live to see that guy along with many others in the New Years honours list meeting the queen.

The Indepedent are reporting the US warned us (earlier in the year) that abedi was going to lead a terrorist plot in the North West

I was in Germany during the Berlin atrocity, and it’s amazing how many times the phrase “slipped off the radar” appears in reports.

Somewhere along the line the law needs to be changed, even if it means occasionally infringing on civil liberties.

Not quite the Minority Report, but something similar.

I sense that's we are more ruthless when targeting terrorists overseas e.g. via drone strikes. However, we know that our armed forces face prosecution if they are found not to have abided by the letter of the law.

There probably also needs to be more thorough vetting of who we let in to the Country as refugees.

Yep, he and the other reported homeless person that helped have had enough on their plate as it is, never mind now with the things he's seen he's gonna have to deal with. Everyone who attended that scene is a victim that need the best of help and support offered to them.

On the fire service - I would have thought whatever explosion fire crews should be some of the first to the scene incase anything is on fire/assess structural damage etc.? That's the most surprising thing to me as to why you were held back.

There are continual conflicts in the world so the idea of just letting refugees in isn't sustainable. Is there not a land the UN could designate as a refugee country offering temporary residence until the conflict in the refugees' homeland (or the threat to them) is over? It could also act as a base to manage the flow of genuine refugees (i.e. not these north africans jumping on the bandwagon) where they can apply for residence in whatever country they like - more manageable for receiving countries then who aren't just getting a wave of crime increase and other problems.

Granted, I'm not sure where this land would be - it'd have to be somewhere with little population and diplomatically feasible.

Members of the Brigade, a few of whom had family members inside the venue, were going apeshit at being held back and are adamant the "head of" should carry the can.
The view is whilst the decision to hold back was taken within strict guidelines common sense flew out of the window

Any terrorist attack runs the risk of follow up attacks so it is natural that this should be considered.
In this case no such attack happened but what if it had taken place this time nullifying the concentration of all the available emergency personnel, equipment and vehicles ?

I fully understand and empathise with the brave Firemen who would doubtless have chosen to be the first there (as per usual) but there is no certainty when any terrorist action takes place.

Don't know if any other Blues were at the Rugby League Magic Weekend in Blackpool over the Bank Holiday, but I found it particularly moving, when on 22 minutes into the Hull KR v Bradford Bulls match the whole crowd ( of mainly Yorkshire folk) did the " Stand up for Manchester " thing, followed by a spontaneous chant of " you can stick your fucking ISIS up your arse"

Ask for volunteers then, our crew mansgers family was lucky they were shielded from the blast by people behind her, I guarantee if she had not phoned and the news had filtered through we would have gone, I know of other lads who's families were also there I pray to god they got a call saying their families were safe otherwise that would have been shear hell.

Sounds a bit like a situation an HR worker for one of the more southern brigades described to me a few years ago about a girl who drowned in a frozen lake a because the H&S rules at the time forbade use of a ladder across the ice (too risky) and the team on hand had been so drilled about not contravening the rules that they felt they had to follow them.
Think she said the rule was subsequently amended to include leeway to make personal/reasoned judgements based on this case.

Victoria station is back open tomorrow, all train & tram services are running.

I get the train from Ashton to Victoria every day for work. Each day I get off and walk up the stairs past the arena foyer side door to get a connection.

Going to be so strange and sad being so close to what happened.

I went down to St Annes Square today for the first time since the attack, absolutely devastated by the experience. The thing i wasn't expecting was how quiet it would be, not ashamed to say I was holding back the tears.
