Virgil van Dijk

Been at work all day so totally out of the loop. I'm seeing nothing on Sky sports and would've thought they'd be falling over themselves to report him choosing the dippers over us. Plus MEN says he's signing for us in the summer. What's going on with this deal?

His injury is serious enough to end many a career.

Plenty never come back the same player.

Maybe City just don't think the huge price is worth the risk.
To be fair we all tried to console ourselves that RVP was a crock when he went the other way. They managed to keep him feet for most of the season and that was enough for them to win the league. John Stones ain't there yet mate. He will get here IF (that's a big if) we are patient enough with him but for now, he's got nothing on VVD, if I'm being sincere.

Starting to sound like our name was used yesterday to squeeze the maximum from dippers.
Absolutely spot on. It was a ploy to get them to act fast under the false pretense that we could steal the deal.

Tolmie, I respect you for your contribution to this sub and all the ITK stuff but your last 3-4 comments are absolute bollocks. You're worried about VVD's injury, but completely fine with Kompany as our primary CB? There are not many world class CBs out there who also happen to be in the market. VVD was one of them and losing him is a big deal. Accept it and move on.

Anyone jumping on Txiki's back after delivering Silva and Ederson, with Walker and Mendy lined up can get a grip and take a running jump.

Until last week no one even considered VVD a major target, it was between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Not giving Txixi any grief but any DOF could bring in the latter 3 for the fees being bandied about...Solid work on Silva and even better on G.Jesus though

Sounds like sour grapes to me this mate, he's a fantastic player and can see no reason why he won't come back stronger.

Big blow missing out on him

Sour grapes, mate?

I simply have never rated him.

He's no better than what we have IMO, and if you are having to pay £60m for that, then there is no sense to it.

People laughed when I said we should have signed Gary Cahill from Bolton when we had the option, and I still stand by that.

Stones is £50m and will be all the better for the last year.

i'd assume a risk thing or he just prefers Liverpool(it happens) because he is certainly good enough.

Bonucci has never played in a back 2 in his life? and he is as mistake prone as they come as is.. A much bigger risk for similar money imo
Wouldn't say No to the best CB in world football

Do we really need a CB, though?

We looked great in those final two months with Vinny back and even Otamendi looked a class act.

Imagine what Vinny will do for Stones, the best exponent of what Pep is trying to achieve.

Irrespective of Vinny's fitness issues, our failings last season were down to not scoring enough and taking our chances, not him missing.

It was the nature of how we conceded, not the amount (certainly in relation to Spurs) which coloured the narrative of last season.

My opinion is that two world class full backs and the extra firepower will take less onus on us having to have Baresi and Maldini at the back.

Save the £60m, keep Mangala or play Tosin if we have to, and put it down towards securing Mbappe and Sanchez.

Yeah agree and Pep has a record of rather going for midfielders wingers or strikers before a defender. So Sanchez or pushing the boat out in trying to get Mbappe will do me.

I have said this before it wasn't the defense that failed as much as us not putting away all the chances we had last season the fact we only conceded 6 more than Chelsea says it all...

I respect your info mate but this is utter NS. VVD is currently twice the player John Stones is. He has everything in his locker, and I agree he has nothing on Bonucci but if we let go off him just because we could have a chance to land Bonucci then I would hope he won't turn us down at the very last minute like he did last season allegedly.

Stones has already performed at a much higher level that VVD, simply because it's asked of him at City.

I still feel City felt they could take it or leave it with VVD, because we need the money in other positions.

Liverpool are poised to win the race to sign Southampton's £50m-rated Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk after it emerged he wants to move to Anfield if he leaves St Mary's.

The 25-year-old is one of the hottest properties on the transfer market.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made his signing a top priority.

The Reds refused to comment on renewed speculation but it is expected they will intensify efforts to reach a deal with both Southampton and the player.

Chelsea and Manchester City have both been heavily linked with the defender, who joined Southampton from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

But BBC Sport understands Van Dijk wants to move to Anfield in what would be a major coup for Klopp and Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group, who are willing to spend big after qualification for next season's Champions League.

Liverpool still have to reach an agreement with Southampton - and a demand for a fee well in excess of £50m could mean negotiations will be complicated before any deal nears a conclusio
