No questioning his stamina then.

So do you guys think we not after a CB at all? I think we still short in this positions because I cant see Kompany stay fit for the all season and Kolarov is not good enough

So just to be certain, people here are happy to not spend a fortune on a CB which clearly has been our weakness but they are more than happy to buy Sanchez, a position we are well stocked in. Classic.

I'm with you on the priority, but it is a fucking ridiculous sum of money & would feel like having our arses spanked.

I'm just not having it that Liverpool will pay it though, until proven otherwise. So I'm still hopeful we might move in, when we've done our other business, been officially rejected by Mbappe & VVD has proved his fitness.

Then we will know how much money we have left & can have our arses spanked without it affecting other deals.

For me, it's more about giving one of the CBs that we've spent an absolute fortune on a chance. The two things that have characterised the last couple of seasons have been a complete lack of a consistent CB pairing, and constantly rotating, aging fullbacks. Add to that last season a catastrophic goalkeeping performance for at least half of our games and almost every mistake was punished with a goal. While I wouldn't complain if we brought Van Dijk in, it wouldn't surprise me if a couple of very good full backs who play every game transform the whole defensive unit. I'm not ready to write off a £50m 22 year-old, and I think it's extremely important that we get it right with John Stones, because we need an English core to the team. But I also agree that Sanchez is unnecessary (but also wouldn't complain if it happened).

Gutted if we don't get him, he is a class act and will be a brilliant signing for whoever gets him...

We've gambled and lost enough money on foreign CB's who were unable to adapt to the British game. We know this guy has. That makes him a great buy for a top team. Shame that it's looking like it won't be us.

We should have picked him up cheap from Celtic rather than making a bonfire of whatever tens of millions we are going to lose on Mangala.

We should be in for at least one and moving Kolo on. Sadly it's a certainty that Vinnie will pick up injuries.

Thanks but no thanks. It took me 2 years to get over Savic's performances at Klanfield and the Liberty Stadium.......(shudders)!
So basically your in the instant fix camp and don't have any interest in allowing these young lads time to learn and develop (this isn't meant to sound as offensive as it probably does, so apologies if you take it as such). As for Savic, hes spent the last couple of years at a club prepared to integrate him and made a starting berth practically his own. I agree he didnt look all that when with us but did we give him enough time. From my pov its more of a what if question, ie what if we had kept him and allowed him time to adjust and develop (him and Nasty), my view is that if hes good enough for perennial la liga challengers and cl semi final/finalists then he probably would have made it here and we wouldnt have a thread debating the potential destination of a player whose had two (albeit good) seasons in the pl for a transfer fee in excess of 40 or 50m.

I think now the PL has changed that much that time is no longer a luxury clubs (top clubs) can afford to take. There are so many financial incentives that having a model of needing to succeed almost immediately is defacto, particularly if the manager wants to keep his job - sad but IMO, true.

suppose I can't disagree with that, I guess then we should start coming round to the idea that unless we unearth the Beswick Bergkamp, Moss side Messi or Collyhurst Cruyff whom are instantly brilliant the only purpose our much vaunted academy will serve is on the balance sheet marked under player sales

Maybe - Maybe Not. I think Pep might tinker once he has a winning team (by that I mean won the league). I think it took him the whole of last season to come to terms with it and now he knows what he is dealing with. Next season, I see us bringing in top players to win us the league (hopefully) and progress well in the CL. After that, I could see the scenario whereby the top youth prospects getting opportunity

I think it's good to see that we are telling clubs straight that we will not be held to ridiculous ransoms regardless of the state of play with our squad, £60m+ for him is scandalous.

Our transfer record was £55m for De Bruyne, it would set a bad precedent for other negotiations

This is a lot of money but as you see due to the premier league cash transfer fees are going in sane - Lukaku ( rumoured 75-100 mill), Walker 40 mill. I think this is the one signing we will regret missing out on, he has all the attributes for our system, and still only 25. Liverpool will be a lot stronger with him in their side.

If he signs for Liverpool then I hope I'm wrong.

Rather telling that Otamendi has nearly twice the number of interceptions (a trait Pep rates highly) than the next center back.

But some would have us believe these stats are meaningless and Otamendi is brain-dead >_>

F**king hell, VVD has suddenly become a mix between a Baresi, Maldini and Bonucci if you read some of the comments on this forum.

Surprised that Real, Barca and Bayern haven't been fighting over him if he's that good!!

You must’ve not noticed that VVD is actually Varesi Valdini Donucci.
