Joking aside - I believe he would have improved the side and seems to have a presence about him ( which Kompany aside ) our other centre halves don't at present.

Personally speaking the one that winds me up the most is how the hell were we never in for Toby Alderwiereld when Southampton were selling him......now he is as good a defender as there is in the premier league.

Whilst we wasted a lot of cash on unproven players - he was ( and still is ) the perfect fit alongside Kompany and how our scouts could not see it is a mystery

F**king hell, VVD has suddenly become a mix between a Baresi, Maldini and Bonucci if you read some of the comments on this forum.

Surprised that Real, Barca and Bayern haven't been fighting over him if he's that good!!

That's because they don't look at the market the way English clubs do - RM have defenders and will look to sign their Galactico, Barca just wouldn't pay that money for a CD and probably neither would Bayern.

I don't think people believe he is the next coming but are happy to give their opinion. Personally I think he would suit our system better than Bonnuci is younger and similar in price, maybe even less wages. We need a CB and VVD is up there as the best available. I guess if he was playing for Athletico rather than Southampton you would probably want him more.

Rather telling that Otamendi has nearly twice the number of interceptions (a trait Pep rates highly) than the next center back.

But some would have us believe these stats are meaningless and Otamendi is brain-dead >_>

If you chase balloons you are bound to catch plenty. The problem is where you are, when you miss one.

If I gamble on a 50/50 interception 10 times a match i'll probably get 5 interceptions.

But I could also give away 5 goals the 5 times I miss.

I genuinely don't believe people are so stupid as to not know the idiocy of posting stats like that to try and argue how good a player is.

60 mil for VVD was a big ask even for a club like City. But in my humble opinion our defence was bad and sometimes downright dreadful because of the 5 players at the back atleast three and sometimes 4 were out of their game. Getting our fullbacks and goalie sorted would make our defence much better. I am not saying we should not go for a CB this TW but we should prioritise full backs first and if a CB is not available it won't be a disaster people think it would.
If a decent keeper like Courtois and good defenders like Luiz and Azpi can make Moses and Alonso world class , so can we.

With respect to Bonnuci the only thing I would say VVD has over him is the age factor. Look this guy is a very good player but what has he done at the highest level? The answer is very little. Now if he goes to the dippers the very first time he pulls on the red shirt he will be put under real pressure. This type of stress is unheard of at Celtic and Southampton and he will be under the microscope from the first minute and he might not be up to it. Bonnuci on the other hand is a giant ok we only get 4/5 years out of him but he is more likely to bring us success and importantly assist with the development of JS.

He hasn't done it at the highest level because he is 25 and is working his way up and is about to get the chance. Going off this philosophy we would never have signed Silva, Sane, Gabriel and you could argue Aguero and KDB plus lots of others.

Bonnuci is 30 and would be moving to a league and new country that is miles away from what he is used to, watching the CL final he got ripped and had other good defenders around him. Nothing is ever guaranteed

It's just too hilarious to see how defensive you get. So easily triggered.
Never even argued anything about him being good.

The "LOL SO TRIGGERED" bit might have worked if you didn't end your post with "But some would have us believe these stats are meaningless and Otamendi is brain-dead >_>"

Because exactly like I said, the stat used in isolation is meaningless and everyone knows that.

Interceptions per 90 min (league games) -
Otamendi - 2.81
Bonucci - 2.24
VVD - 2.72
Stones - 1.82

Guess Stones is the best and the other 3 are dogshit according to domalino.

So if Otamendi stays beyond this window, it means Pep Guardiola and the club rate him.
Would you say then that it's safe to assume that the fan's negative opinions on Otamendi are, well, not as correct? (if it were correct, he should be sold this summer surely)

The whole defence got ripped the other night not just Bonnuci. He looked fairly average to me alongside Denayer in a poor league and has been some what over rated since he
joined the Saints putting in solid performances for a mid table team. I think our pay out for JS will prove to be better value than 60m on this guy.

How does saying that 'some would have us believe he's brain dead' = Otamendi is so good?

Are you mentally challenged sunshine?

Does it? The club and Guardiola tried to sell Kolarov last summer but the Turkish coup called off his transfer...does that mean Pep rates him, or does it mean he tried to get rid of him but used him when he got stuck with him?

I'm beginning to think you are as you're claiming I said something I never did.

You claim people who say the stat is meaningless are wrong, I pull you up on that being bullshit as we all know it is meaningless on its own.

You post a stat to try and show how good Otamendi is at something Guardiola values, whilst knowing that Guardiola will care much more about the context of those interceptions than the actual quantity.

But some would have us believe these stats are meaningless

...because they are.

Otamendi is a class defender that struggled next to 2 inexperienced center half's and playing in a high line last season. Put him in a team that defends deep and he'd be 1 of the best in the league.

I literally have no idea how someone can read my post and draw such an inane conclusion.
