If PSG gave Neymar the money to buy himself out, won't he have to pay tax on it - it's either a gift, or a salary or a bonus or whatever. In which case, won't they have had to give him £300m+ to pay the tax bill?

Not any more, the tax administration in Spain has ruled that the payment from the club on behalf of the player is now no longer considered income but a capital gain for the player. That difference is very important because now when a player fills in his personal income tax, he can point to this capital gain as a loss because he paid the money to his former club. You can not offset as a salary as a loss, but you can if it’s defined as a capital gain. But he need to pay vat.

While it would be a good signing I don't see paying over a hundred million for a player with only one full season behind him as arriving at the top table.
