I'm good, hope you are too.

I've stayed out of this thread, other than posting my own opinion on him, which is that I think he's a decent player, was impressed every time I saw him last season.

Nothing to get excited about, granted, however ticks boxes and in the grand scheme of things is relatively cheap at £20mil or so.

Ahhhh some sense Rammy!

Who is a seasoned, experienced premier league captain who has had years of European experience too, who arsenal were also in for last summer. Ultimately I cant honestly say I've watched him much or followed his career, but everything in TH's post about Tosin, Mangala, and Kompany to me makes sense. I think there is just a bit of prejudice about him on her as a recent united player, who then went to an unfashionable club, and who is rarely raved about by the punditmafia. I admit I was shocked at first, like most were I'm sure, but after thinking it through, I honestly hope we get him.

As for being 29 - not a problem for me at CB - would be if he was a striker or midfielder of course.
(Unless his name was Alexis ;-)
The CB situation now was the same as before the summer, so if indeed it's a case of really really needing another one then this 'Alves has fucked it up' doesn't wash.

I couldn't give a fuck that he played for United.

It's the same reason why I didn't want Delph or Sinclair etc, they're just not good enough. Then we spend a mini fortune on them and complain later that we have to budget down the line when in the same window we can't sell them for even half of what we paid for them.

Mangala odd error gets overhyped. Bravo, stones otimendi made errors last season but they are forgiven. Our defence shot itself in the foot time and time again last season. Mangala wasn't part of it.

As I said our youngsters should be providing defensive cover otherwise what's the point. And if there is a key huge game Dino or yaya can play centr half. Yaya played centre half in a champions league final. With tosin and yaya is this really necessary?
I think something's necessary beyond the cover you've mentioned. Unfortunately we need a contingency plan for Kompany being out for the whole season that doesn't break the bank. As I said, my City head would love Mangala to be it - even better if we all got behind him so he's less nervous and grows as a player. But I think we've learnt by now that if you can't Cruyff turn your way out of trouble in your own 6 yard box, you're not in Pep's plans.

This potential deal strikes me of the Lescott one. We overpaid massively for Lescott yet he formed a formidable partnership that helped deliver the title. I cannot bring myself to get excited about this, and the fee quoted is bonkers but I guess we have to wait and see. He may well either surprise us, or not come anyway as I can't see him getting lots of games. I just hope we are not - like we did when we signed Lescott and others - offering him crazy wages as there will be no sell on value in 3 years. Demechelis did a fantastic job for 2 years then fell off a cliff and I suspect that Evans would be similar if not worse, 25m for a quick fix to the squad is a bit rich. Anyway Pep knows what he's doing doesn't he?

That's sort of mine, but I haven't watched him enough to cast a real opinion. I will have a look and take a view, like any other cover/squad player we sign. Don't care who he played for a jot. It doesn't matter one iota to the club or affect his performances in any way .
I remember Wenger being in for him last summer, that was for E25mil, and I was ambivalent then, so certainly see no reason to be one way of the other at this moment in time with us being rumoured to sign him.

Evans himself is bound to be keen, lives local still so a no brainer for him, still an international so must be confident in himself that he's good enough to get game time and keep his spot.

Bluemoon at its finest this thread though, this thread rattling along at a ferocious pace, lol.

Rodwell, Sinclair, Delph all mediocre players not cut out for a top team. Evans couldn't even cut it in LVG's system and when he was expected to be a decent ball playing CB he failed miserably. Now he's no longer on a team that focuses on defense x1000000 and doesn't have Vidic as his partner to save his bacon from the past. Waste money in a few years that could go to Bertrand or another quality CB.

You seem to infer (apologies if that's not the case) that Mangala is on a par with Stones and Otimendi - but he's not. His game is riddled with errors and on the ball he's shocking. Not saying Stones and Orimendi are perfect but streets ahead of Mangala.

As for Fern and Yaya @ CB. Are you sure? Easy to say. Fern gives far too many free kicks away to play regularly in a back line and Yaya - yes I know he played there 6 or 7 years ago but he presently has the turning circle of the QE2 and in case you hadn't noticed he can be a defensive liability for all his other attributes. I take your point re the youngsters - for odd games they should be able to cover but Pep has to plan for all eventualities- what if two of our starting centre backs get long term injuries- can the kids step in for 3 or 4 months, twice a week? A big ask.

Squad player fine, ex rag manageable but 20 mill is the biggest pisstake we've ever done, no one will ever persuade me otherwise.

If he is an Alves replacement then experience of big games and leadership and wisdom to offer the young kids at the club coming in is as important to Pep as his ability.

He will only be cover in relatively few of the key matches as he is obviously a back up.

Those off pitch traits are something we lack and could be worth the money alone.

I concur with the majority of views in the thread; bit out of the blue - so to speak.

We'll just have to trust Pep and co know what they are doing.

You'd like to think though that someone at the club would be aware of the sensitvities of signing an ex united player.

I for the record have no problem with it. Let's hope we are buying a diamond in the rough.

He got banned for 5 games for spitting at an opponent. After that, according to the M.E.N, he rarely played for Utd again until LVG flogged him. Apart from his distinct status as 'average', I wouldn't want a player who gobs at opponents playing for us.
