Jonny Evans

I don't even think it's really about the price. Evans isn't a lousy defender. He just isn't a very good one. In short, he's mediocrity personified. Fourth choice? Maybe, just maybe, although £30 mill would be some sort of joke for a defender who's not very young, and not very good. If Vinny gets crocked (or Stones, or Ota) and we find ourselves having to play Evans against the likes of Real fucking Madrid, or Bayern fucking Munich, there'll be tears.
All along the line, this just feels like a backward move. A throwback to the 2012 window, when we seemed to be buying distinctly ordinary players out of desperation. I find myself wondering if we ever made any serious moves for Keane. I would have thought we had more drawing power than Everton, on every level.
If Evans comes, I'll support him, because he'll be wearing that shirt. Just don't ask me to get enthusiastic about it.
No, you must be enthusiastic and further more, if Pep and Txiki like the look of him then you must believe him to be the new Franco Baresi even if you have watched him play for many years and know that he isn't. Sorry, them's the rules.

He will be the invisible man if he joins, I will just pretend he doesn't exist

Been listening to the West Midlands football phone in for the last couple of days in òrder to get the west Brom punters opinions on the matter.

Comedy gold.

One of the deluded fkrs on there actually said that John Williams was the worst ceo that the club had ever had, and deserved sacking immediately for not shafting us to the tune of, at least, £70 million... His twisted "reasoning" being that if, that's what VVD is valued at, in the current market, then Evans (who, in the punter's view, ìs at least as good) would be just as difficult & expensive to replace.

For the record, the reporters on there reckon it's a done deal & we're handing over the thick end of £30 million for the privilege :-(

Will be a revelation for most of the people in this thread just how good Evans is. Pretty funny reading some of the more hysterical replies. :)

Are we signing a different Jonny Evans than the very average, slow Jonny Evans from WBA?

100% agree, he'd probably bench either Stones or Otamendi (which is IMO not the greatest achievement itself). In the worst case Evans would add competition and experience to the squad in a rotation player role.

At what stage does Stones step up or is it never going to happen ? he should be able to play 60 games a season saying as he hardly ever backs sweat. so that leaves vinny and otta, we'll be fine without him.

Bit harsh that mate. Think Stones will be fine. He needs to sharpen up mentally but it's a big season ahead for him and i expect him to really kick on. Evans will actually be the perfect partner for him when Vinny's not available/is being rested. Loads of people making shouts for Ben Gibson who's just been relegated and only has one season of Premier League experience.

NURSE!! :-)

Haha.

I always think it's good from time to time to step out of the myopic tribalism that surrounds football and actually go and talk to people who know more than you. I did just that about Evans and am now pretty excited about his signing. Say what you want but there's a lot of Midlands journalists and West Brom supporters who are taking the piss out of the reactions from some City fans. Our centre halves in the last few seasons have hardly covered themselves in glory whereas Evans has been outstanding for West Brom for two seasons now. Granted their expectations are much lower than ours, but most people credit him with being their consistently best player during the period he's been with them. Certainly he's going to bring the kind of stability we rarely saw whenever Otamendi/Stones for example played together.

Appreciate that he played for the rags but considering the number of ex rags that have come through the door that shouldn't really be an issue.

I was surprised by how universal the response was from midlands based journo's, WBA fans, and even pundits. None of them are surprised, all of them are amused by the backlash, none of them think he'll be anything other than a reliable CB who will make us better than we are now.

Just a shame it's 30m not 15m, otherwise I'd consider it a no brainer.

Get Evans, try for the Espanyol LB & a late bid for Sanchez and we're golden.

Scott Sinclair, Bony and Delph were star players for their sides as well.

Evans will come here as 4th choice, play like 15 games and then he'll probably move to Sunderland next season for like 5 million

Bang average defender who looks alright in a very defensive side.

30 million for JFE how is anyone defending this?

The only people who seem surprised by this in a negative way are City supporters. Says a lot.

I thought LVG got rid because Evans cannot cope with...pressure/complex tactics/rotation

What could possibly go wrong if he signs for us
