Jonny Evans

I think that Evans ticks a lot of boxes from a footballing perspective, which is why presumably he's on the list of defenders Pep would like. I appreciate that he's not pacy, but defensively he's exactly the kind of stable figure that we need.

The biggest box he ticks, is that it's probably possible to sign him, for money we can afford, wheras we have most likely missed all the better targets due to the farting about waiting for Mbappe.

Pep has won titles with all manner of defensively challenged characters at cb over the years & some have ended up with top reputations, so there us nothing says he can't do that with Evans, who is obviously a more intelligent footballer than Otamendi, for example, but we should not be gambling on somebody of this level stepping up a level, in arguably the most important position on the pitch after goalkeeper.

The guy was a fucking bonus for all City fans, when we saw his name on Utd's teamsheet. We hoped he would play against us, & when he did, the outcome was usually positive in our favour.

Nobody can airbrush this out, because it's true

3 at the back means we need more CBs. Imagine if VK got injured again, who do we put in? Tosin is far away from making it with us.
In that case we need a TOP CB, not Jonny Evans. Do you really think Evans can do the job if Kompany gets injured? I don't.

This is the point people are missing totally.

Pep's system asks a fucking lot of the centre backs, as did Pellegrini's.

Therefore, they should be the best money can buy.

It's so obviously simple.

If Evans goes up a level, & it works, it's no problem.

If he plays at his normal level, he will get fucking murdered & we will be a cb short if Kompany is injured.

Could help Kompany not get injured though? Plays the cup games and home bankers if there is such a thing etc. At the minute VK has to play every game. Might be about protecting Vinny as much as coming in when he's actually injured.

More chance of City drawing a lower league club at home in the Cup than you posting something positive tbf.

I don't rate him that highly and certainly not for the price that's been talked about on here.
Don't get me wrong, he's fine as a stop gap or someone to step in for short term injuries but i'd worry about him if he ended up covering long term injuries and played a lot of games.
It's just my opinion.

True, but what if he just gets injured anyway ?

And anyhow, surely folks can see that Vinny has lost a yard of pace & is himself a 'veteran' now thanks to his injuries ?

We are crying out for a 'new' Vinny, more than any other position on the field & as we did with tbe fullbacks for years, are 'making do' whilst we sign more flamboyance, rather than accepting it & dealing with it.

Pep knows it too, but he can't help himself signing attackers.

Can players improve? You not watched him much at West Brom have you! Yep at the scum he was a liability at times just like Smalling and jones are now.

Of course I've watched him at West Brom. He's done ok.

And of course playing for Manchester Utd is an entirely different matter & playing for Manchester City, in a Pep Guardiola team, is an entirely different matter again.

Surely it doesn't need me to point this out ?

So you've been an avid watcher of WBA I guess? I mean, you must have been to conclude he's what we need in our quest to win the biggest competitions we enter.
That, or it's just wishful thinking like the majority of others who are horrified that some of us don't see this as a fantastic signing.

Wasn't just talking about Evans. You seem to be depressed about most things City. Not that keen on Evans myself but better him than relying on Tosin as a back up. Needs must really.

Players can improve for sure but there is no guarantee they will, specially at 29 years of age. If he was of the same age as Mendy, for example, people here wouldn't mind. Let me put it this way, before we got linked to him, would Evans come to your mind about a possible CB signing? and would you not have pissed yourself laughing if it was Arsenal or Liverpool instead of us?

It's not "can he improve" it's "he has improved".

I agree with this but then who do we target? From what club/league do we target players that will fit with Pep?

Perhaps as has been suggested elsewhere we could just coach what we already have to be better?
