I very much doubt that was the case. Like you said before Pep spoke about the need for cover. I don't see how a situation then would've developed then where we didn't at least try to bring cover in.

Don't think Sanchez had anything to do with it, when Kolarov went we were hoping to sell Mangala and use the squad place to replace Kolarov with Evans, when Mangala move fell through we didn't buy Evans because we didn't want a 5th centre back. As I have already posted I think the big centre back signing is lined up for another window whoever that may be. As for VVD I think Southampton set themselves to make a stand and wouldn't have sold to anybody, unlike Sanchez he won't lose value with 5 years left on his contract.

Surely that would be too risky. Remember his history of breaking down in the early states of games and being out for weeks on end. If he is not 100% it would be wise to rest him up for a week or two. However, just can't see him making it through a full season unless he retires from international football which he is unlikely to do until after the WC.

Agree although Belgium have qualified so he could ask not to be picked until the world cup, then retire fro internationals.

Agreed. I'd love him to play in this match because it feels huge and I suspect we will lose without him but we have spent a lot of the last year desperately trying to get him fit and keep him fit. Throwing him in to a match if he has any issues near his calf would not be worth the risk.

Probably due to prices going up & VVD in particular.

But I don't think we really want 'cover' we want cover for Kompany, which means a top class cb.

I recon we probably couldn't do that because of increased prices & other deals getting in the way, so we decided to gamble on Kompany staying fit & went for general 'cover' in the form of JFE at the death.

I recon VVD will be gone as soon as a club offers enough & that could just as easily be us or Utd, as Liverpool.

I think the rest was a cock up.

When I said cover I meant a top class player.
