The big concern with this type of player is when it happens, it's sudden and drastic. Just look at how quickly Yaya went downhill. Giving him a big contract even for a year is risky, and I'm sure it's in the clubs interests to let him wait a little, it'll motivate him to keep performing. Makes far more sense to give it to him next week than in August for that reason alone.

I think everyone would assume he'll take Yaya's place in the squad set up next season.

Not concerned in the slightest.Nothing like Arsenal he isn't refusing to sign and at nearly 33 hasn't any real transfer value unlike Sanchez and Ozil.

Not at all the same,we let all our long serving players contracts run down,they are of an age that we couldn't sell,if we want them to stay then we offer them an extension as we did with yaya

City have offered him a new 12 month deal and expect Fern to sign it very soon.

We are just going to how they rolled at Barca with older chaps contracts. It worked there and seems to work here because the players know they have an super duper engine and believe in themselves. Fernandinho knows his is one of, if not, the best in the world at his job nor does he currently have anybody breathing down his neck to nick his spot. If feels a nice comfortable situation leaving both with options.

Sounds about right. It's pretty common nowadays to offer 1 year extensions. Chelsea do it as well.
