It was a penalty all day long, not harsh, a blatant block and then thrown to the ground.Not all fouls in the box are given as penalties though. It would be harsh if it was given IMO.

well they should be. Just because rules aren't applied properly doesn't mean we should ignore blatant fouls.

My opinion was not based on the kind of foul, but about how far Otamendi was away from the ball.

I base it on the simple principle that penalties should be given for obstructing (unlawfully) a goal scoring opportunity. In this case, from what I remember, there was no way Otamendi would have got the ball even without the foul.

a foul is a foul wherever it takes place on the field. The rules don't differ, what differs is the consequence if you break them.

You might want to try actually reading the rules of football then, it kind of helps to know anything about the game you're passing commentary on.

As simple as "your" principle may be that is not the letter of the law though, is it.

Thanks for the links. Maybe, I don't recollect penalties given in similar instances where the foul is away from the ball in play.

Maybe there should be a rule to give red card/yellow cards without penalty in such cases.
