Virgil van Dijk

As we're still challenging for all four trophys at this stage i think getting a defender in is a must. My only concern is VVD is right footed when ideally we need a left sided defender.

Game 1 play Otamendi & Stones. Game 2 Stones & VVD. Game 3 play VVD & Otamendi. Repeat. Everyone gets the same number of games. Each gets to play two out of every three games. Inevitability there will be a sequence of more games given injuries and suspensions. Everyone can be kept happy.

With Stones and Otamendi having big roles to play for their countries this summer having VVD ready to go at the start of preseason will be a huge boost.

VVD also strikes me as a leader. Can't have enough of them.

A former manager of mine, who is a Liverpool fan, bumped into me a work just before Christmas. After commenting on what a great season he thought we were having he joked, 'If you get Virgil Van Dyke its over between us!' Don't under estimate what affect this signing will have on other clubs and their fans.

You could say all of the above about Sanchez as well.

Agreed. Plus we can play 3 at the back more often when Mendy returns and Aguero with Jesus up top, so deadly.

He wouldn’t be a back up. The back ups would be Kompany and Tosin.

If Pep can turn Otomendi into City's Ramos, Stones into a rock at CB, and coax performances out if Mangala, imagine what he could do with VVD?
With Vinny fluctuating between the injury table and constantly looking like he needs game time, Mangala on his way out, there is a real need for another top CB.
I'm sure Vinny is well aware that barring a miracle, his playing days are coming to an end, after almost a decade at City it's only right that he is kept on at the club, not only in a coaching role, but as a shining example to our youth teams of how to conduct yourself on and off the pitch

That’s a good point, vinnie needs a run of games to get up to speed but his body won’t let him put that run together. Heartbreaking for the man. Vvd would be a massive addition to the squad. Frightening for every other side in the league.

If he is our target, which seems the case his mentality and confidence in his ability will determine if he chooses us or Liverpool.

City pretty much guaranteed to win the PL at least once but expected more, Liverpool probably won’t win it once in the length of his contract.

City competition for places and if he does not perform chances may become limited. Liverpool comfortably better then what they have and if he does not hit the ground running I would expect lots of chances to prove himself.

Please please please I hope we sign VVD. I would love to just take the piss out of my dipper mates if this one happens :)

At his best VVD is up there with Alderweireld as the best centre back in the premier league. As an individual he can bully and dominate players the way Vinnie did a few years ago. Signing him massively strengthens our squad and would have us set at centre half for the next 5 years. He will have plenty of games even if he is '3rd choice' and I don't think it would take too long before he becomes an automatic starter in the big games regardless of the improvement of Stones / Otamendi.

Think once Mendy is back we will see 3 at the back more often with 2 up front, gives us a chance to rest Sane and Sterling. Bit as well. May be next season we see that though.

Fucking hope not. We're the best team in Premier League history playing the way we are, no idea why we'd want to fuck that up and play 3 at the back

If you look at the improvement that Otamendi and Stones have made under Pep then the thought of VVD being there too is tantalising. He's already a top, top defender but Pep could make him one of the best in the world.

Because Pep likes the options to play different ways and when we had Mendy and Walker 3 at the back was one he used so he could play Jesus and Aguero together, he's said he needs Mendy to play them together more.

It's not my money, so I don't care if we pay £60m for him. According to the meedja we overpaid for:

Sterling
KdB
Stones
Lescott
Walker

....and probably more. Funnily enough, no one mentions it any more.

We play our best football with Sterling and Sane as wingers. Going back to 3 at the back means one of them would have to warm the bench. I just don't see the point in this transfer to go back to a less effective formation. Make far more sense to just sign a cheaper 3rd choice CB who would be happy to play a back up role.
