I don't know if it's the game you're referring to but I just remember watching him with amazement in 2002. Total genius of a player who I suspect Chelsea fans thought of as we do David Silva.
A lot like Silva,in the fact that opposition fans can see "true gentlemen" play the game, but also don`t come over in interviews as cockwombles, nor seek attention.
Zola was definitely one of those types.

I've always found it peculiar that in the States, where ephemeral nonsense is everywhere, their sports journalism in all its forms is so much better than here, it seems they'll accept bull about almost anything except sport, but here there are precious few sports journalists or broadcasters worthy of the name, it seems as consumers we're happy to accept a very low bar.

You often hear the criticism "they're stealing a living" but for the most part UK sports journalists (for want of a better word) really are.
The yanks base absolutely all their sports reporting on stats, that's why. It's hard to say Liverpool have the best attack in the PL standing in front of a big fuck off graphic stating that City have scored 19 more goals than them in 19 games.

I think the point was more to do with performances against us, hence the reference to Zola's display at Maine Road.
The subject arose at comment #8214 regarding best player ever seen live, with Alysson Rudd saying Littmanen for Liverpool v Aston Vanilla, and developed from there.
I would imagine that there are many, many games and players over the years to choose from. It's all subjective.

Fair point.

They do, it's a long held tradition and because they do the likes of Rudd and Collymore could not thrive in sports journalism in the USA.

What is particularly bizarre is that over the last twenty odd years we've seen the growth of media football analysis using state of the art computer graphics with ball by ball breakdowns and expected goals and stats popping up all over the place and I would have expected it to have a tsunami effect, washing away all the bull, but instead we're experiencing the Talksportification of almost everything.

It isn't having any effect yet because the vast majority of the pundits didn't use metrics in their own playing days, it will happen.

Remarkably in the UK you have this too, it's called the motherfucking scoreboard.

All of the above is true. There seems to be less of the king's new clothes mentality too. For example, what you might call the 'Cleverly phenomenon' (bigging up a player's attributes whilst ignoring the glaring failings (see, Rashford's lack of goals or Alli's petty side, this season) isn't something that their media seems to indulge in.

If you look back at the 'no history' of City, most of it has been written by Southern based or rag etc loving reporters (or both at once). Because if you add up all the fans of the big southern teams, plus rags & Liverppol, City were a small drop in the ocean (now getting bigger by the day into a fair old wave)

In the black & white days, the only people who knew Colin Bell was twice as good as Trevor Brooking, were the people who saw him every week. The historical perspective was written by rags, Spurs, Arse, fans etc in Fleet Street. Jimmy Hill rated him, so he got a bit on MOTD, but on the whole, it would be Bobbbeeeeee Chaaaarlllton the same way it's been Roooneeeeeeee &, if Wayyyyyne was 25, & played well for the rags, he would likely get poty even now, not KDB or Silva.

The people who have grown up with that, don't suddenly want it proving to them, that City are better than anything they ever saw.

They prefer, Talksportland.

Derty Alli is villified by the media according to Soccer Saturday.

You can tell he's a protected Engerland player.

Can't wait for big nose to tell us how the Dippers ate better than us shortly.

Waste not want not

Hmmm "sports journalism" the majority of journalists fall into this basically, the criteria is "do you know anything about football"?...well I support United/Liverpool even though I'm from London and never been to a game in my life
And it's "guys I'd like to introduce you to our new Head of Sport"
And there you have it Sports Journalism summed up
The majority get the gig based on just being a follower of football, not on any specialist knowledge etc....basically scraping the barrel with regards to insight etc

I can’t take this sky sports Tottenham, Harry Kane, Dele Alli cream fest anymore, it’s making sick already

Mate they ignore even that when they want. We had a lucky 5-0 win this season, remember?

Oh I know. That’s why I continue to shake my head at so much punditry in general. The scoreboard answers so many questions, yet an entire multi quadrillion dollar/pound industry continues to churn forward based on re-making the wheel. When I think that Castles and Collymore actually get PAID to spout their wank, it does my head in. Pundits should either be newsreaders, top experts or BeijingRed4Lyfe.

Sky Sports coverage of this match seems to be sponsored by kleenex and durex lube.

Jamie Redknapp actually said, referring to a Harry Kane pass, if Kevin De Bruyne did that we’d be talking about it for days .... what’s the need in that bitter comment
