Newcastle post match thread

Why are we missing so many chances at the moment?
is it burn out?, should have had 6 and it nearly cost us at the end.

Ugly win, but should have scored more. Newcastle made no attempt to play football.

The booing of Raheem shows just how retarded the Newcastle fans are and the way they went bonkers with delight about a closing down a player by the touchline in their own half showed how desperate they've become for success. Feel sorry for Rafa, great coach but managing a championship side.
Overall a dominant performance and if it want for Sergio having an off day we would've won convincingly. Our closing down and winning the ball back was magnificent, probably the best we've done that all season.

Listened on the radio in my camper last night... Good win, appears the performance was as much a reflection of Newcastle's tactics as any issues with our players. I see comments about some of thew tackles on our players and I would agree that there appears to be an attitude with certain teams/managers/player that "if we can't beat them, cripple them". This needs to be stamped out - no pun intended; the thought of a player being seriously injured out of simple spite - a'la Keane on Alfie Harland is too much to think about and it's time refs were a little more alert to what appears to be happening in every City match at present with little being done to stop it.

There was a slight deflection from a defender who tried to block the ball and this meant that Aguero was actually played onside for when it came back off the post. I believe ex-referee Halsey pointed this out. There was a lengthy debate following the game that has already been reported on here or maybe on another message board but the conclusion was that it was definitely a goal.
I think Halsey has that wrong, the defender was never in control of the ball.

We can only beat whats put in front of us , the Geordies were happy keeping the score down for 80 minutes and then if still in the game , look for an equaliser . You cannot blame Benitez for doing this with the players he has at his disposal and i expect the same against Palace and Watford , teams are giving us so much respect but unfortunately we will see little of our free flowing football against these type of tactics. Kun and Jesus's goals were definitely offside the officials got both decisions right , but the foul on Gundagon was a leg breaker and a red card and the ref missed that . Tiredness is kicking in the likes of KDB , Kun and Dinho are looking jaded at times so i think the Palace game will be a step too far , and predict a draw at Selhurst Park , which will not be the end of the world because the title is still in the bag.

I think Palace will be a little more adventurous than Newcastle, and they have improved since the owl found a roost there. I dont think they would be capable of playing like Newcastle, Benitez is a master of setting up a tight defence even with the players he currently has at his disposal.

We should see Palace off, if we dont I suspect it will be down to missed chances. Palace have considerably more to offer going forward than Newcastle so could punish any generosity in front of goal.

we should be showing whatshisname head ref bloke those 3 tackles and do it today, its disgusting

I believe you have that 100% right......it states a player becomes 'active' and therefor offside if he gains an advantage when the ball deflects off of an opponent ;)
Yep, that and going by phases of play it stays the same phase as no onside City player touches the ball and Newcastle don't have control of possession.

I would say the exact opposite.....the reason people are saying we looked a bit tired/slow/off the pace/not our best or worst performance is not because any players were/are tired.....but simply whilst good players, Bernado Silva and especially Gundogan are nowhere near the class of who they replaced (Sane & Silva).
add Danilo to that as well ;)

but if we won by 4 or 5 last night what would have you said ?? we hit the post 3 times and aguero should have scored we had many more chances and still open them up we was just sloppy last night in front of goal the setup did not change and we had 3 or 4 player changes and they slotted in without losing much in the team movement and skill

(we looked a bit tired/slow/off the pace/not our best) that can happen with the best starting 11 at this time of year and also away to newcastle at night is not the best place to play football with the cold and wind and there fans up for it and wanting everything so like i said the shape still looked very good and we had more than enough last night to beat them but sloppy in front of goal

We’ve scored 4 in each of our last 3. Didn’t look like burn out to me we absolutely dominated the game. In my view, only when we stop creating anything we can talk about burn out.

When say shite I mean in the context of the normal level of performance this season. I don't mean shite in the same way that United are shite.

Then don't say shite because it deflects from some very good points that you made.

Just a tough one to judge because I think Newcastle's mentality enabled us to dominate rather than us being overly brilliant. What's great though is the fact that teams are beaten before we've even kicked off.

We dominated because we are so good. We won the ball back brilliantly for most of the game and would have dominated them regardless of their overly negative tactics. Even when they had their final flurry, they actually created very little.

City did what they needed to in the middle of a heavy fixture load. The only significant issue yesterday was the finishing. Your criticism of some of the passing was accurate but I don't think it was of much consequence because we still created enough to have won by more.

I think neither the press or some fans give us enough credit for breaking buses down every week. Players arent robots or magicians to win comfortably every game especially in the face of such negative football but we still manage it and still play beautiful football creating openings with 10 men defending

Yep, that and going by phases of play it stays the same phase as no onside City player touches the ball and Newcastle don't have control of possession.

The relevant section of the laws of the game:

"A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:...

• gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:
•rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar, match official or an opponent
•been deliberately saved by any opponent

A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save by any opponent) is not considered to have gained an advantage.

A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area)."

So I believe Aguero was gaining an advantage.

The argument put forward regarding the Aguero goal was that if the defender makes no attempt to play the ball and it hits him accidently then Aguero would be offside but in this case the defender deliberately attempted to play the ball and actually touched it which changes the situation under a new interpretation of the rule. There is no reference to the defender having to be in control of the ball. Halsey claimed that all refs know this rule although it is not otherwise generally known.

"The new rule changes this situation as the attacking player in an offside position when the ball was kicked by a teammate who gets a rebounded or deflected ball after it was deliberately played by the opponent (except from a deliberate save), is no longer offside and is not considered to have gained an advantage.29 Apr 2016"

Any criticism of Newcastle is wrong. They very nearly took a point and we could have only blamed our selfs. They got their tactics right, they have an inferior squad, but a very good goalkeeper in the making.
