If they don't have to be good enough to play for us to be cover, what's wrong with using Tosin?

Nothing really apart from in some games, experience is useful & if there was a long term injury to cover, it would not be the best introduction for a 20 year old youngster. He is v young for a CH and needs introducing gradually. Just my opinion of course!!

He is also the man that signed Claudio Bravo and played Kolarov at CB for a good chuck of last season, so he can make mistakes, sometimes if something looks stupid it is.... even when you have a great manager(not sure he can claim to be the greatest manager of all time yet, but that's a very subjective argument)

I think Kolorov at CB was an inspired choice & he did a better job there than at LB. So - yet another great tactical move by the manager you seem to doubt. Bravo just didn’t settle into English football but he did have a good reputation in Europe. All managers sign the occasional failure. I’d trust Pep.

Signing Bravo didn't look stupid at all at the time- he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world and the only available one who suited our style. Plus, Kolarov was consistently excellent at centreback all of last season.

no he wasn't, he was occasionally good, playing in Serie A suits him.

That's my point, all managers make mistakes, simply because we are 15 points clear doesn't mean Pep can't make howlers. As for doubts its less that I don't trust Pep and more the fact that signing JFE would be totally outside our "normal recruiting policy" since the takeover we have never gone down the route of signing an older British based player for significant monies(all the guys we signed from Arsenal where in there 20s)with a contract that will almost certainly include time when he is past his "best" (even if you rate him). However, more than that look at it from his point of view this will be his last "big" payday, even without the United connection he would be looking to screw us over(or indeed whoever he signs for).

The thing about Evans that concerns me most, is that he'll come here, and be willing to be back up, that's not what we need, we need a player to be hungry to succeed as first choice, Evans isn't that person, no matter how 'versatile' he is, and I really don't rate him either.

Why are we even interested (apparently although I still refuse to believe it) in a £30m for 30 year old bang average defender in Jonny Evans?

Makes £30-50m for 24 year old Harry Maguire look like deal of the century to me. Football has gone mad.

They don't have to be howlers. I've seen enough football to realise that some things, no matter what seems to be obvious, just don't work. We've had loads of players who've looked to be just the job and it's pretty clear after a few weeks that they aren't gonna do the job they were bought to do! There are hundreds, thousands, probably tens of thousands of variables within a footy set up - most of which are not controlled by the manager or the players.

Keeping Mangala who has improved greatly, is imho more sensible than a £30+million ex red. who is bang average. and will be greatly overpriced to allow Pardew to have a fighting fund Really dont know much about Martinez but surely somebody out there can do a job Overall we cannot complain what a first half to the season! but if we want multiple titles (PEPISM] 2/3 players are required

That's very true, every transfer involves a level of risk and I agree there are thousands of variables many not controlled by the player or the club. However, signing a 30 year old defender who will be a free agent in the summer (which will add a premium to the personal terms), is very unlikely to improve are factors that are foreseeable at the very least.

I think as a backup to Stones and Otamendi he would be good. Kompany looks like he is screwed and will be concentrating on WC. Mangala is Mangala. Tosin isnt experienced enough yet. £30m though is way too much though, if they dont lower their price they will lose him on a free.

I guess that's the main point yes we need a backup and JFE "could" fill that role. However, 30m and the kind of money he will be looking for there has to be better options out there as for WBA and the fee they will drag it out until the death if we don't pay them what they want, it's still a sellers market (as long as there is at least passing interest from someone else) and the end of Jan is 20% of season right there.

every time i see this top of page one i think oh no we haven't have we

Hahahaha. Same here.

I thought as a 4th choice back in the summer he would have been decent, but with Vinny looking like he is coming to an end I want to see a top quality addition who can challenge Stones and Otamendi now.
