Jonny Evans

That's very true, every transfer involves a level of risk and I agree there are thousands of variables many not controlled by the player or the club. However, signing a 30 year old defender who will be a free agent in the summer (which will add a premium to the personal terms), is very unlikely to improve are factors that are foreseeable at the very least.

This is the worst aspect of football club management - ignoring or dismissing the obvious over which you have 100% control. The Mangler has not had a bad game since he came back into the reckoning and had a decent run of games. Evans might have the experience over The Mangler but those who've watched JonnyFE can't come to any other conclusion, setting the Rag element aside, is that he is not very good, and I fail to see how, even in the shortest of terms, he would be an appropriate signing!

The prospect of this signing (and I have no idea if it's a likely one) doesn't excite me at all. To be fair though, any fan of any club he has played for seems to rate him and plenty of united fans still speak pretty highly of him. If we were to sign him I'm sure a world class long term option would still be in the offing at some point in the next 18 months, but if that signing, whoever he may be, isn't available right now, then maybe this is just a pragmatic move to provide decent cover for what we already have. It wouldn't be an overwhelming experience for him to join a club of our size and he knows the league. Boring things to say I know, but probably true. At the end of the day, if we do go for him, then it'll be because Pep trusts he can play our kind of game and given the attention to detail he puts into these things, I'd have to trust the manager's judgment on this.

I think as a backup to Stones and Otamendi he would be good. Kompany looks like he is screwed and will be concentrating on WC. Mangala is Mangala. Tosin isnt experienced enough yet. £30m though is way too much though, if they dont lower their price they will lose him on a free.
Thing is a £30m price tag would come along with a big wage and long contract. We wouldn't get away with 6 months and selling on for £20m.
