Aymeric Laporte

After reading that goal article, really looking forward to see how Laporte fits in. Looks like he will be rotating between Nico, John and Laporte.

I think Laporte will potentially have an important part to play in the CL as we hopefully progress.

I am assuming Kompany will not be classed as 4th defender but because of injuries he will only make sporadic appearances next year and so effectively he will be forth defender. The JFE thread needs locking (gets on knees and puts hands together in prayer)

That would be my ideal.

We have 3 senior cbs, in Stones, Otta, Laporte, then make up the 4th position from Kompany & Tosin. With the accent on getting Tosin as many games as possible. Tosin would effectively be a 'free pick' for a season, as he'd still qualify as u21.

Kompany, even with injuries, would still probably be available for rotation for double figures worth of games, which is plenty for a squad with 3 top rotating cbs.

As I've said before, if Arsene does this for us, he will go right up in my estimation.

I haven't looked at the squad in detail, but I don't see how there would be space for another cb on top of Laporte, Fred & another unnamed player, coming in.
There isn't. I think unless we're committing to 3 at the back full time both Mangala and Kompany need to go in the summer before another comes in, it's leaving us too short in other areas.

Actually, without looking at it in detail, if both Kompany & Mangala did go, then Yaya's position becoming vacant would open the door for you know who, at least as regards the Premier League squad.

Yeah they'd both still need to leave though, more than 4 senior centre halves is silly if you're structuring a squad for a back 4.

I wonder if we'll see John, Nico and Laporte in a back 3 with Walker and Mendy as full backs in some games. Would allow us to play Sergio and Gabby together up top.

Pretty sure we will at times , but just as likey to see Sane and Sterling as part of the front 2.

A pint of Ric, or a pint off Ric?

Rotating often, particularly in the short term, but then also part of a back 3 once Mendy is fit again.

Marcelo Biesla (former Bilbao boss): on Laporte: “Laporte is a great player with every quality. I don’t remember a single fault that I could tell you about. He’s fast, he has character, he is competitive, he has very good technique and he is very intelligent.”

Marcelo Biesla: “Aymeric Laporte’s ability is very natural, and he defends with great balance. He assimilates the challenges quickly and assertively.”

Ernesto Valverde on Laporte: “He is a player who is mature, despite his youth. On the pitch you see that because he takes responsibility for his position. Experience is always important, but if you already have that experience when you are 22, then imagine…"

Guillem Balague on Laporte: “He just fits the mould of what they want, a centre-back who can play from the back and is strong. At 6ft 2in he perhaps is not the tallest in the division, but he is certainly a powerful defender.”

Guillem Balague: “Stones will look at him and say 'right, this is the level'. There will be a fight between them, alongside Otamendi I would say.

Certainly he is a player that deserves the attention of Manchester City. To be their centre-back you have to be of a special mould.”

Guillem Balague on Laporte: “He certainly has the quality. He was followed by Barcelona in the past and wanted by Pep Guardiola when he first arrived at Manchester City."

Even if fit, he'd be 4th in the pecking order for me. The other 3 are just better, time has caught up with Vinnie. He should no longer be club captain after the summer too. Should be one of KDB, Silva or Fernandinho.
