FC Basel V Manchester City - Post-Match Thread

I didn't say we would play like that you ninny. I said if we would did we would be out. I swear some people are unable to read.

...and I said we wouldn't play like that against better teams, so what's your point?

I swear some people are unable to think.

A professional deconstruction of a decent European team. No injuries & good to see Silva, Delph, Kompany & Sane back.

A special mention to Bernardo. Like his namesake Silva, it's taken him time to adjust to a new team, country & way of playing, but he's now starting to look the bollocks.

It's been a good day for us.

bernado was the dogs bollox tonight....best ive seen him on a city shirt

Well I'm specifically referring to the guy getting 20 yards clear through on goal from an aimless ball over the top, where he decided to inexplicably poke it first time harmlessly. That was a gift that he chose not to take. Then Nico seemingly getting bored and deciding to just foul there guy in the box instead of just defend it properly. Another gift, but the referee didn't give it. Then the third would be the unmarked far post header from about 6 yards that the guy put harmlessly wide, all coming from the scraps of another fairly aimless long ball over the top that we just didn't deal with. I'd back most Championship sides to bury those chances (as Bristol did)

Defensively that was as poor as we've been this season in my opinion, regardless of them not taking their chances. I don't think we've let teams get chances as easily as we did today, without them coming up with good play or really putting us under pressure

I get the feeling you'd like to see us knocked out. just so you can say, I told you so.

Well, I hope I'm not being 'diluted' when I suggest that you're talking absolute tripe. Levels of concentration dip when the game is won, to continue giving 100% would be physically and mentally draining. Do you think Usain Bolt gave the same 100% effort in heats as he did in the final? Of course not, he eased up when the race was won.
When did I say anything about “giving 100%”? Are you even reading my posts before you respond?

I dispair with the state of discussion on here sometimes.

And I was responding about his and others’ larger point about closing out games better than we did. But ok, back to tribal happy clapping before we’re put in our place.

Happy clapping?

We just won 4-0 and you come on here and accuse happy City fans of happy fucking clapping?

Who was moaning about that?

Or were many of us rightly saying Pep would not be happy with the sloppiness being displayed when we were trying to close out the game. Sloppiness that would have been punished by better sides, leaving the second leg a much more contentious affair. It had nothing to do with were we “giving everything” and everything to do with the right (Pep) way of closing out a match.

We were clinical, and I’m very happy with the result, but only the most diluted among us would think we were at our best, especially in the last 30 minutes, when we could have conceded two goals at least.

Boggles the mind how people think elite managers and players are perfectly happy with playing poorly as long as they are winning in that moment. You think Pep is happy with that last period of the match? Do you think Sane was? Delph? Kompany? No, they’ll enjoy the win for about 4 hours, go to sleep, and then wake up thinking about the match—with special focus on the last third hour—and how they can improve on their performances and further cut out the errors/bad decisions.

As I said to you on the match day thread when you called me and @stan bowles idiots: this is why they are elite managers and players and you are posting on a forum.
Pretty much this Seb

No, I accuse those lambasting any one that suggests we could improve on the performance.

It’s a forum FFS, if you want a place to just slap each other’s backs and smoke cigars go down to your nearest gentlemen’s and order a scotch.

I think the problem you have mate is that when it comes to football and specifically players responses to the situation they find themselves you are a bit of a simpleton.

No offence mind

Some of the comments on here! Anyone would think we were back losing at Stockport County again! We just beat a decent European team 4-0 on their own patch, a team that don't often lose against English teams, we are 99.99999% in the last 8 of the premier European tournament, 16 points ahead in the premier league, in a domestic final and 3 or 4 games from an FA cup final, really what do people want!

I must confess I stopped reading at a 100% level after you used the word diluted rather than deluded...the opposition was clearly very weak and I lost concentration.

I am simpleton.

It's ridiculous.

We should have conceded a penalty and the defence was suspect on several occasions and could have been punished and probably would have been against better opposition.

I'm a little perplexed why that opinion is ridiculed when it is in no way taking away from a great result.

Good for you, put words in my mouth based on fuck all. I'm very rarely negative about City, but at the same time I'm not going to pretend that defensive performance was anywhere near the standard we have set this season, or the standard required for us to win the CL. It was a let off.

Pep has also stated we could have been 2-0 down before we scored and weren't at our best defensively, is he also desperate for us to get knocked out?
