FC Basel V Manchester City - Post-Match Thread

Excellent result, which should make the second leg a formality. But a few things to point out:

Gundogan was excellent. His work rate and desire in this game was incomparable to recent domestic performances. He has been coasting through games ever since returning from his last short injury. We always knew that there was an exceptional player in him. We've seen it before, especially in the Champions League. He needs to put the same effort into league games.

Sergio continues his excellent recent form, which is going to be vital for us going forward as we progress into the later stages of the cup competitions. It's clear that Pep was extremely happy with his performance. Fingers crossed this will further boost his confidence as we approach the league cup final.

Bernardo continues to improve day by day. It's going to take some time before we see the best from him, but his performances now are deserving of starting games. He keeps the ball almost as well as Silva.

Defensively we were all over the place at times. Whilst we didn't concede, Basel had two or three golden chances that they really should have converted. They also had a penalty claim wrongfully dismissed. I put most of this down to reintroducing Kompany and Delph after extended absences. I still feel that we'll struggle defensively in this competition when we face the other elite clubs. The main issue is that we don't have a second defensive midfielder that we can play alongside Fernandinho to see out games.

Danilo could definitely be used as a second defensive midfielder...

Happy yes - but @SebastianBlue has a point - long balls into our defense caused us more trouble than we'd have liked and Basel might well have scored. Otter's challenge might well have been called for a penalty on another day or by a different ref. On the other end, we were ruthlessly clinical, and Basel's keeper could have at least done much better against Silva's goal; in other circumstances, we might well have gone into half time tied or, with very bad luck, even trailing.

In short, 3-0 at halftime was flattering - 1-0 or 2-1 might have been a better reflection of our overall play to that point.

Godspeed. ;-)

No he wasn’t, he was talking about the retu

no he wasn’t. He was specifically talking about the return leg when asked about taking it easier. He mentioned that for example a 2-2 draw or 3-2 defeat doesn’t set the right tone for the next match. Completely in the context of this discuss.

Did you sit through the interview whistling with your eyes closed and your fingers in your ears and then just make up what you wanted to hear. Fuck me, you couldn’t have misunderstood Vinny’s sentiments more if you’d tried.

the only person who has to turn 360 yards is Dave when he's up for some rumpy-pumpy.
Not sure even 360 yards is a safe enough distance...

having watch the game and city was in command from the start to the finish some of the reports this morning are are way off the mark
basel wasted great chances to let city off the hook ??? basel should have a pen and a goal before city scored and lucky city went on to score 4 ??? but better teams will find city out

ok yes basel had a good shout for the pen but the player made a meal off it and went over to easy. there 2 chances was only half chance for me and ederson was out quick to put the guy off leaving him know time to think so good keeping in my book. but the media will never give city credit and its all spurs great result away to juventus

am i seeing something different with this manchester city team we out play anybody home or away and champions league last 16 all the teams are not mug's and basel beat united so they have something but when manchester city have just roll them over and it could have been 6 or 7 away from home in europe what more can you do

Your right coats. What do you have to do? True we were a bit sloppy at the back early on and they did have a joker between sticks but all things considered a highly professional performance.

Does make you wonder how United lost to them doesn't it? Because we've just smashed them while barely getting out of third gear, while using the game as a training excerise for players returning from injury. Shame they didn't get Shaktar in this round so we could see how it would have gone if the tides were turned

You are Robbie Savage and I claim my £5.

Yes Basel could (?) have scored and it was possibly a penalty.Other than that we steamrollered them. 0-3 at h/t.superb.
Yes the Media are full of praise for Spurs , who did well. I remember was it last year ? - we were away to PSG and all the pundits said we were on "a hiding to nothing" - result 2-2 and we knocked PSG out - after the return leg.
We should enjoy this team - while we can.
I was surprised to see Sane come on - he could well have got a kick on that ankle. - luckily he didn't.
German Team manager - is it Joachim Loervw ? - was in the stands. Maybe Gundogan might get a recall?.

I noticed Savage being 'interviewed' in the street by Cheesy - blog posted last night ? - I think.
