Mikel Arteta

Arsenal haven't been great the past few years but even still they are unlikely to drop below their current position of 6th as those below have a long way to go to break the top 6 so he can't really take them backwards. If they stay in 6th he won't have done.a bad job and if they move up from there he will be seen as doing a good job. He can't really fail at arsenal

If Mr Arteta goes to the Gunners, I guess it will be as "Head Coach".

I think the old fashioned idea of a "Manager" who controls everything at a club is over now.

Mr Wenger might have been one of the last ones...

But of course, I don't know for sure.

It's unlikely "he'll take them backwards" but they are entering a period of transition now Wenger has gone. If you are old enough to remember, we were in constant transition for over 30 years. I can't see Arsenal being relegated but anything can and often does happen in football.

If Arsenal appoint the right manager, and if the board allow him to address their squad properly by releasing big funds for a GK CB DM and a winger, possibly a CM, they will be on the up in no time IMO.

But i like to watch them whinge on AFTV, so i hope they continue to underachieve as it is good entertainment value.

Reports it is confirmed he hs signed, good luck to him, hope he can do alright and just finish as runner up to us above twats like potch/mour/klopp

Looking at the replies from Tarquins they don't deserve him anyway.

It's a risk, but any appointment would have been with the rebuild necessary

Strange appointment by Arsenal when you consider their position. I can see Arsenal Fan TV being quite lively early on next season.

Pretty disappointed in this but it's a big opportunity for him. There's been a lot of articles written this season about the influence he's had and how Pep has used the advice of the other coaches a lot more. I'm sure we can reshuffle the pack though and given Pep's signed his extension it hasn't been a bad week. Think it's a bit of weird move for Arsenal although I can see why they've done it. They get to herald it as a brave move for a young and exciting coach (who apparently is hugely respected at the club) but ultimately, it's someone who won't have a lot of power or be able to make big demands of them (which ought to worry Arsenal fans).

Hope he falls flat on his face and Arsenal crash and burn. Other than that good luck and thanks.

Cant be true Paul Merson was convinced the bestbman for the job was. Brendon Rodgers
Go for a lie down Paul

Disappointing if true, hopefully he's not able to take too many of Pep's coaching secrets and tactics to Arsenal. We should have done more to keep him if Pep feels he's so important, double his salary or whatever. I'll be really fucked off if Arse start playing like us and become genuine title challengers now.

If Arteta is a success at Arsenal then we'll be able to pick from the best of the best who want to succeed his position under Pep.

Good luck to Mikel. It's a big jump and I hope he does well.

Haha good wind up

If Arteta is a good a coach as has been touted with Pep extending his contract it was never realisticto think he would stay on as an assistant manager for three more years, hopefully Pep will stay even longer. When such an opportunity arrives you have to take it and can only wish him good luck... On getting second.

or 4th haha

Who says Pep just continued Cryuff's way of playing? I'm interested: as far as I can recall, I've never seen or heard anyone say that.

Pep's taken loads of ideas and come up with his way of doing things but my original point was that there's nothing in there he can patent, and other teams and managers do similar things i.e. Arteta is not going to be taking away loads of trade secrets that will suddenly make Arsenal an unstoppable superpower.
Yes, with Pep it's short stabbing quick passes - hence you need bottle to play for him and bottle to keep controlling firmly hit passes with the ball first touch, win it back rapidly etc. There's only so many ways to play football. Pep has an extreme brave style - full backs and centre backs that can switch to operating in midfield. What sets him apart from any other coach in my opinion is that he sees the goalkeeper as an outfield fly goalkeeper - plus of course he's the ultimate man manager. He took Cruyff's total football to a new level. Cruyff learned from Michels in the early 70s. Michels was inspired by Madrid and Hungary in the 50s and told Cruyff (his number 9) to do his magic all over the pitch. What I know Pep has talked about is keeping the ball in a small area on one side of the pitch against 'park the bus' teams. Eventually the opposition comes looking for the ball and loses its shape - 60 yard pass to the opposite touchline where in our case Raheem or Kyle is waiting.......

Listening to TS earlier and apparently his name is an open secret in coaching circles in regards his ability and reputation,he's very highly rated and considered the next big thing.

Maybe Arsenal are being very unArsenal like,by seizing the day.

Fair play to em. At least they are sticking to their football principles unlike the dog and duck down the road who will sacrifice anything for silverware.

There are some Arsenal players who won’t be there much longer.
