Two trains of thought here on the rags, the football they are seeing is awful and once again they are nowhere near us in the league. Is giving Jose another £250 million to spend really going to put a dent in what’s required? It must make the people in charge of the money at the swamp a bit nauseous when the transfer window opens as it’s money down the drain, example Sanchez, example Lindihop, example Micky Terapin, example Dabbing Paul. You think with the money they have they could give us some problems but the recruitment is shocking.

However if you were a decision maker at rag central they would be getting the cigars out on the boardroom. It’s mission accomplished, they’ve kept the stream of Champions league money coming in and I’m sure they can sign a few more noodle and car battery sponsors in the Far East. Why compete with City in a sporting sense? It’s futile as non of them have the first idea how to do it in regards appointing a manager, then giving him the playing staff to compete over 38 games. They’ve not got this right for 5 years now so why bother changing when the dividends of the financial year roll straight into their bank account. All the while whilst they play their decaying brand of football in a slowly decaying delapodated stadium.

They are miles behind us on the field and the financial advantage they have now will evaporate. Bring on season 18-19, they will be giddy in August when they burn some more money in the transfer market then by December the stark realisation will kick in that they are no where near. You can set your watch to them.

Some problems with that feedm, there will eventually be a kick back from the tv people. How long will they keep showing the turgid rubbish the rags keep churning out. Once that starts to happen then the number of 'foreign' supporters will drop and so will the income. Will not happen overnight but would you keep watching? Remember these people keep watching because they are 'the best' and nobody can take the p1ss out of them.

i. e. The Arsenal strategy.
Just comfortably finish second every year, knowing that those behind you can't catch up as they are not it guaranteed CL income while not bothering to put in the investment needed to catch up the leaders, as the ROI is not worth it.

Could be enjoyable viewing because unlike Arsenal in the 2000s they do have multiple opponents capable of making ground on them, which may mean any slip-up could lose the CL revenues for a stretch.

Woodward replied: “Playing performance doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business.”

Some rags do make great points about Jose. He is trying to sign players who are in their late 20's and keep players who are in their early mid 30's. Who ever is appointed after Jose is going to need to do a major squad rebuild.

in the last five Premierships the rags have never finished within 15 points of the champions.
This will eventually sink in and take it's toll on their revenue streams.
This is why we cannot and shouldn't take our foot off their throats.

Also the obligatory piss easy first 4 or 5 fixtures will help. They bum a couple of teams 3 or 4 nil and the giddy twats will be at it again. Fixture release day will be interesting.

Bingo.

This is the truth of it, Utd used to strive to be "there, or thereabouts", where "there" was winning the league and "thereabouts" was top four, but from a commercial point of view the additional revenue required to be "there" (win the league) cannot be justified, it costs more than the additional revenue generated by being top dog. The optimum place to be from a commercial point of view is top four.

Woodward has quoted money bags Liverpool as his exemplar, they've never won the Premier League yet still coin it. Arsenal have used this model for the last 15 years, top four is like winning a trophy! Well Arsene it isn't, because keeping the shareholders happy is just one part of the equation and while in the pre internet/social media world you could get away with this shit, in a truly global world, millions of young people are coming to football for the first time and 1999, the Invincibles and glorious Istanbul are ancient history to them, they want fast flowing exciting football now and there's one team in the Premier League that gives it to them in abundance.

If a really top star had the choice of playing under Mourinho or playing for Pep, it's a no-brainer. Mind you, a differential of £200K per week can turn the heads of many a mercenary.
