Riyad Mahrez

In other words, let's not get high-balled by Countinho's price and then erroneously conclude that Mahrez is a good deal. I don't really think Countinho's selling rate should have been applicable in our case to begin with.
I doubt it was either where the club are concerned, it was a mere comparison and a bit of perspective.

The club, as they have shown for a while now, will only pay what they want and feel is right.

So I don't see any problem or reason to be annoyed at any transfer fee for any player we sign.

It really is that simple.

Finally someone who understands how these things should work :)
The thing is, thats not how things actually do work. Transfers are a scarce market, i.e. there are few elite players, and a lot of teams that want them. When one elite player moves, it doesn't matter really where the source of the money comes from, that becomes the new benchmark (eventually) and future transfers are valued relative to that. Why do you think new transfer records keep getting set? Because sellers have leverage and thats the new price.

The key to that analysis is the word 'Elite' players.
Your analysis is right. But it doesn't affect the whole market. Just those deemed elite players. The key is too not get jobbed into letting teams caregorize your target as 'Elite'.

Hence why Salah goes for 40 mil and Dembele/Coutihno over 140. Statistically, all 3 were similarly talented players. The disparity in price was simply a function of arbitrary categorization.

This happens all the time. Fortunately for us Mahrez isn't deemed 'elite', even though he is as good as those who are (Ahem: Hazzard), but we should not pay a Tweener price. Pay the good player price. Which is now 40-60 milliim.

Pep always said that he likes the players who win 1vs1 to break lines and create spaces. I mean you need a player like Sané who is always attached to the line but on the right side. Bernardo is very technical but usually goes downtown. Sterling did very well at the beginning of the season but then not so much anymore. I think Mahrez would be a great signing.

What?

This will be an unpopular opinion but I do not understand why we are so desperate to buy a right sided inside forward who clearly won't be able to play on the left. Sterling and Bernardo are already occupying that spot. Pep has been very reluctant towards using Bernardo in that CM position so I find it very unlikely he has suddenly changed his opinion. I know youth players may not be ready to start but if we continue with buying back up players to our starting 11 by breaking transfer records we are never going to have a successful academy. It is not my money but I still find it ridiculous that we are about to spend this much on Mahrez. I really don't care about how inflated the market is, because we are just making it worse by agreeing to such exorbitant rates.

How are we making the market worse when Utd payed £100m for Pogba & Liverpool payed £75m for vvd, I don’t understand .

On that theory we will never buy another player, the kids will get slotted in when pep thinks they will benefit,i believe mahrez can play on both sides or will be taught to as pep has moved around others

Why won't he be able to?

In my opinion we are adhering to prices that we do not need to. It is different when we need a player in our squad but Mahrez in my opinion is a luxury player.

I don't get some people. He's good value at £60m.
True, a very very good player who could play anywhere along the front or roaming in the centre as his passing is good, would be a fantastic signing . Can’t understand why some have a downer on this transfer .
