Maybe Pep sees all the players you mentioned as interchangeable. Pep has been looking for more help upfront so maybe feels he can add a striker by using someone already in the squad (Sterling?) and could then plug in Mahrez on the wing without any drop off in play? It would seem Mahrez can play anywhere across the front and as a attacking midfielder , so maybe there are "parts" of his game that Pep thinks is better than others in the squad. I think its more about the role Pep has for him than whether his overall talent is better than someone else in the squad....

The clowns from Arsenal should have sold Sanchez in the Summer and bought Mahrez. It was a no-brainer and yet they didn't do that. And it is the mystery of English football as to why no one has snapped mahrez up. He's the outstanding talent in the league outside of the big clubs.

I very much hope we sign him. It makes me smile to think we are close. How do you possibly stop Man City next season? We will have so many options.

The fact that no one is automatically picked makes for a happier more understanding squad. It also means that players off form can have a rest, no one is overplayed and adjustments to the team pattern can be made when necessary.

I thought this forum was about our the fans opinions hence the debate? If we all just sat here and agreed with everything the club manager and players did there wouldnt be much to discuss.

I wouldn t be surprised to see Gundogwan shipped out and Barnado moved more centrally and Mahrez brought in. We would definitely be stronger then imo.

Gonna contradict myself here and compare......if you put Mahrez in the positions Merlin gets into,probably 10 times out of 10 he will shoot.
It's a gripe of mine with Silva,as good as he is,he doesn't shoot enough IMO.Fuck knows why,but he seems to prefer the pass.
If Pep decided to take off KDB,Silva,Sane or Sterling and put Mahrez on,I wouldn't have a care in the world......for me,he improves us.

I didnt take it has a dig Spider. I know what you mean about Silva but I also find it incredibly hard to fault the rest of his game. As he's the best I have ever seen in a city shirt.

Yes, you’re right. And had it been any other manager I might’ve had a stab at a calculated guess. But every week I’d try to second guess his team selection but never came close. Gundog/ Bernado seems quite likely but wouldn’t put money on.
 
Mahrez shows fantastic ball control and is one of the best dribblers in the prem. Good finisher, decent long shot and has not yet had the benefit of Pep/Arteta coaching. Great addition to squad and something we need to rotate with Sane/Sterling and poss Bernado. Is there any reason why he can't play on the left if needed? Potentially vg signing in my opinion. I would have him over Sanchez any day of the week. Remember the players he has had to play with over his Leicester days....

Mahrez will get plenty of games during the season when you factor in injuries and squad/team rotation. I think Pep could look to play Raheem as a striker in some games especially when you take into account both Aguero's and Jesus's injury record during the last couple of seasons.

Considering it’s World Cup year I’m thinking Mahrez will be one of our most used players for the first month or 2 of the season! Him coming in allows sane and sterling to get the desired rest/pre season under their belts!
If mahrez is flying by this point it’ll be down to one of those 2 to displace him!

Who do you bring on, yaya, nmecha or mahrez?

Also means our wing options can be out and out pace sane and sterling. Or tricky, bernardo and mahrez. Or a combo.

Hard to put a plan in place for that

Maybe the question you should ask, is would he weaken the first team when played? I don't think he would. It is very difficult to bring in players better than we have. The trick is to bring in players who will not weaken the team when they are required to play.

Breaking our transfer record at £70m is a hell of a lot of money to pay for a player that won't weaken the team.
