General transfer rumours

Well, we got a better GK for nearly half as much. Wonder if Lineker et al will be saying "...£67 million for a GK. That's when I knew football had gone mad." Doubt it though cos it's the Dippers.

Alisson plus Van Dijk....that’s around £140m on two defenders.

The Dippers should’t have the brass neck to mention transfer spending ever again.

But no doubt they will.

I think they are a few years behind us in terms of squad development mate and still playing catch up...They are still at that point where they will pay the selling club's valuation, just to get it done. We dont have the same needs as these other teams. Our squad is strong, top to bottom, so the "need" isnt as great, meaning we have a price and wont go over it. I think Liverpool have filled their 2 biggest needs this summer and could push us right to the end of the season....Personally, I will feel much better if/when we get cover, support for Fern....

That's a decent point, and I take it, but I think you've made an important point in the middle of it that somewhat contradicts your last prediction. Our squad, as you say, is top level from top to bottom. We have two world class players (and I don't use that term lightly) in midfield. Not one, but two. Although one of them is ageing, granted. And we've just got an extremely good forward who can create mayhem. I don't think, even with their additions, that Liverpool are even close to us over a 38-game contest. And I'll make a prediction: Salah will not have a season like last one. They'll be top four, I have little doubt of that. But we're just better, right across the board. No room for complacency, but Pep doesn't do complacency. We need that deep midfielder, but we've got cover for it for I think about one season, if we have to. We must get someone good by next summer, at the latest.

Exactly, and all but a few Liverpool fans will agree to that assessmen.

In midfield Coutinho, Can and ox are not avaiable any more. Fabinho, Keita and Lallana are in. While the signings feel spot on, it still feels like the sum of all parts is the same.

Alisson will be a huge upgrade, so big improvement in defence. VVD massive improvement.

Offence has so far improved nothing, and while Shaquiri can be backup for Salah/Mane, he is hardly close to our backup last season (Coutinho). Ox not available. I'd say Liverpool's attack is slightly weaker than last season.

Liverpool's depth has improved very, very slightly.

Compare this to City, and your record breaking team is intact. All players available. And you have added one of the best players in the league, that can offer new exciting options both for the starting lineup and the bench.

You can't help looking at this Alisson transfer and thinking, “Why is this so fucking easy for Liverpool, and we spent four or five months of daily and finally fruitless negotiations for our man?”. Well I can't, anyway.

Sorry but you have to be a fool, or just have not been paying attention at all, to think that.

For starters they've been trying to sign him since May. 2 weeks ago the journalists were reporting they'd keep faith in Karius because Alisson & Oblak were just too expensive, 1 week ago it was going to be Danny Ward and the fans had a melt down. Eventually they panicked and coughed up - and I feel this really needs to be repeated and stressed if you think it was easy for them- two times the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper.

If we wanted to spend 2x the amount anyone had ever paid for a holding defensive midfielder, I dare say Jorginho would be here now, for about €100m.

Ederson was never the record fee for a keeper. The media decided to change the currency he was purchased in, in order to try and make it so.

He's (marginally) the record fee in £GBP, which being a British person supporting a British club discussing a transfer to said club and comparing it to another British club buying a player is the currency I'm going to go with.

If you're so insecure about him being the previous most expensive GK you need to go back to look up the conversion rate of Lira to Euro's to sterling circa 2001 to make him a few hundred thousand euros cheaper than Buffon, feel free.

'THIAGO WANTS BARCA RETURN'

Thiago Alcantara wants to return to Barcelona, according to AS.

The reported Manchester United transfer target has spent five trophy-laden years with Bayern Munich, but the 27-year-old has reportedly asked the Bundesliga club to grant his wish of returning to Barca.

Bayern are thought to be open to selling the Spain international.

That's all well and good for this season...in this league...but our ambitions lie in conquering Europe. Winning the league but flopping in Europe is not an option any more. Getting that midfielder you talk of has to be done in this window.
