Lyon (H) - Post Match Thread

We should be looking at Fekir in Jan regardless of if him being cup tied in the cl he looked aggressive and dynamic in mf... just what we are missing

Poor crowd and atmosphere set the tone for the game. So lethargic first half it could have been a pre season friendly. Should still get out the group with room to spare but we need to forget Gundogan as an 8 now and Sane must always play on the left when fit.

Was only a brief cameo but mahrez looked a bit more confident when he came on than he has done in previous games which bodes well.

When did you hear the dippers fans against PSG?? I’m not defending our atmosphere, I’m just not having that the dippers fans were any better ...! Without the PSG fans Klanfield would have been no different at all...!

Like I said no atmosphere tonight rather embarrassing for Champions of England

Noticed Liverpool started their pre season earlier than us and they played also more friendlies, did similar US tours like us but they played games even in Europe before that a couple. And looking at them they look very fit, and so far they are playing at a much higher intensity. Not in top form yet look at Salah etc.

Maybe we are nowhere near 100% yet after a long summer and all this slow play, bad passes, bad touches are coming from this.

But even with that we should comfortably beat a Lyon side at home in CL.

Surely in CL if something we learned over the years that mistakes here are punished much quicker than in other fronts. Yet we still start slow, still give away balls and still do what Delph did today or Fernandinho in dangerous positions before their goals.

Our high line is just another thing opponents try to punish us and Lyon did well today with that too, they just didnt score from those one was in the end when Ederson had to come out as Laporte struggled to clear the ball other was when they hit the post could have been 3 down that moment.

We have this kind of game/tactics but if it doesnt work we cannot really adapt. I mean we have to be the team that dominates but open for counterattacks. Real Madrid has different styles, they can be the dominiating team but also can adapt and can sit back play oon counters if thats better for them. Zidane did this very well changing when it was needed in crucial later stage CL games. Sometimes they were sitting back waiting for killer counter with Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema and when they had them they finished it off.

We do not have that tactical ability imo. Not against the very best of Europe at least. That doesnt mean we cant counter vs Everton if needed of course because we can do wonderful counter attacks but I am talking about as overall gameplans and having multiple ones.

5 games left to get the 1st place in group. 3 games away of those time to wake up for the CL games. Easy group or no, not much room to improve if you start badly.

Time to try Stones in the Fernindino position, we have four fit centre half's for the first time in ages, let's use them and try and give Ferni a rest

We are desperate for a midfielder in January. Gundy is not good enough against quick teams

Even when Kev is back it’s going to take time for match fitness and I fear fern picking up an injury due to having to play every game.

We are far too light for hard central midfielders and teams seem to be getting through us much easier than last year.

Aggressive type play will destroy our midfield. It will be a big test when we play Liverpool to see where we are at this season.

Shocking performance and the only positive was when Sane came who should have started. Dhino was very poor and was constantly caught in possession. Quite worrying we did not get cover for him and we need to look in the January window imo.

The whole defence apart from Stones was shit and Laporte looked less than convincing when up against pace.

Hopefully just a bad day at the office.
