Lifted off the Liverpool thread on a forum over here....

Wow.

I just hope Mendy is more disciplined than we ave seen so far from him or Salah will have a field day...Mendy needs to show that he can defend as well as attack and in his last game he showed a real lack of defensive discipline and awareness.

I would have put sane over sterling. Sterling cannot play at anfield against Liverpool. Idk if it’s nerves or that they still boo him but he has been pretty bad everytime we play them.

Looking at the team selection it looks like Pep has picked the best team to keep possession of the ball , the three Dipper rotweillers in the middle of the park will be attempting to kick lumps out of our diminutive midfield , definitely need the ref to be strong today very attacking line-up and showing no fear of the greatest team in the land LFC that has actually won f*ck all

Personally I would have liked one of Otamendi and Kompany alongside one of Laporte and Stones, prefer the blend of youth and experience at the back. Think not starting Sane is a huge mistake. Don't know why he refuses to consider Mendy and Sane in the same team but for me we generally look much better as a team when Sane starts.

Pretty cool with that line up.

No way Klopp had prepped without Sane in mind.

Mahrez has a great record against Liverpool and will slow us down, which is perhaps Pep's thinking.

We need to take more care with the ball and the margins for that are less when Sane is in full flight.

Hopefully Mendy can cool his jets but Liverpool with Lovren in the team has to give us a chance.

Happy Stones and Laporte have been trusted too.

When Mendy bombs forward Sane isn't disciplined enough to tuck in and cover so we'd be vulnerable on the counter, Sane off the bench has been a real nuisance this season so let's hope that continues today

I do take that point but to be honest I would rather play like we did last season and have Sane making the runs, and the left back be more conservative.

It seems we have had to drop Sane and move sterling from his favoured flank, IMO, to accomodate Mendy and his runs. Not sure if its a price worth paying. Can Mendy not just play more conservatively?

Because sane doesn't have the defensive discipline to protect mendy when he needs to.

Arnold got the hook because he was their weakest link against Napoli.
Majority of Napoli attack was from left side .

Majority of Napoli's attack is always down the left side though, Ancelotti has favoured it in every game this season so far. Trent just had a stinker of a game.

Would argue he's gone for Lovren for physicality, the rest of their lineup, particularly that midfield, shows they intend to bully us.

Why would you be happy to drop our most in form player ?

This only seems to happen with Sterling, it is very odd.

Even more so, considering the games Sane has looked shit in were the ones he played with Mendy on the same wing.
Only because it’s Anfield, no other reason, he’s been our best player this season, totally agree
