Hoffenheim (H) Post Match Thread

Strange half for Walker. Positionally and decision making not up to his usual standard.

I think he's carrying something, hasn't looked right for a while.

I did think his introduction helped us last night, our shape/balance seemed more secure despite his couple of brain farts.

Was impressed with Gundo's performance, some of his passing was superb but i'm not sure the way he plays the pivot helps with the dynamic of the team. If Pep and the team can help him with positional awareness like Fernandinho has for covering the half spaces, knowing when to cover when your team mate has moved up, then i think we have a very viable solution there. His passing is better than Fernandinho's, i think he could control a game much like Basquets does for Barca, but he needs to develop into the positiion. Whether we have the time to allow him to develop is another thing.

Gundogan said post match to German TV he had to fill the DM last night
which wasn't so easy for him as he likes to play more on the front foot.

He also is aware about is age and the limitation of a further development.
He knows his strengths and how to help the team.

I think he is a very skilled player and can fill DM against many PL sides,
but his defensive abilities are just not good enough for top sides.
No news really. Great to have him as a backup.
Our quality on the bench (without injuries) often makes the difference.

Complete conjecture of course, but to me it looks like he may have a minor issue with his back.

The way he is currently moving (and specifically, running) reminds me of when I tweaked my back a few years ago. It was just enough to bring tightness and discomfort when I played, which took away 10-15% of my athletic ability and made me look a bit rigid as I moved around. You can take pain medication to mitigate the discomfort but that “tightness” usually still remains until the injury fully heals or is dealt with.

He seems to have some rigidity and isn’t moving as freely as he did last year. I think I have seen him very briefly put his hands on his lower back after long or mazy runs several times (especially when tracking back to defend), doing a slight stretch that you have a tendency to do naturally when your lumbar muscles feel tight.

Yep, I've noticed him putting his hands in the small of his back. Think there's a few of them carrying knocks, Bernardo and Stones seem to be too.

Agree. We seem to have a bit of a walking wounded complexion right now.

He must be carrying something, he's been getting outpaced a lot recently & we all know that's not normal.

Despite the loss of 4-5 of our best players We played some great football. and both sides endeavoured to make a good watch. Sane was a joy but Foden showed he can now be trusted to start I get what Pep sees in Gundo but imho playing where he did slows us Finally i like some other blues have been critical of GJ but despite his continuing drought. i thought he gave his all last night in a fine performance

absolutely agreed about Jesus, he was immense, and for someone who doesnt get much of the glory at the moment, and considering he was hailed as the next big brazilian thing, he wors so hard, harldy gets recognised. He's also showing some brilliant potential lateley, just consistency required now, and if anyone can get that out of him it will be Pep.

Foden had a nervy start but was one of the best on the pitch by the end.,

Sane Motm, I get the sense he is carrying us a little at the moment.

Was sat in 104, the atmosphere was quite a lot better tbh, usually around there it is grumpy old men moaning more than cheering but was really good last night. Nice to see the germans being thrown out of our end too, well done that guy that got the steward. (Despite the other stewards clearly watching/seeing them in our end celebrating, it's like our stewards are just fkin mascots, sat there doing nothing

my first game this season...
still cant believe the Sterling, Sane, Silva miss lol was in the upper stand in the family stand had a great view of it. You certainly do see a lot more when at the match, I couldn't believe the amount of work Jesus puts in shame he just cant buy a goal at the moment yet towards the end he chased back and made a tackle in the right position !. Fodan grew into the game and looks to have a great future. Its hard for me to judge but I thought Sterling and Sane looked abit leggy at the end but that might be normal you just don't see it in the highlights. Enjoyed the game didn't enjoy the journey back in my bed by 5am to get up at 6;30am ! M6 closed in two places and M2 closed in one place …..

Walker doesn't look fit or is burned out.

We would never have forgotten it if Foden's volley had gone in, brilliant technique that only a top player could execute.

Sane is absolutely unplayable in that form.

Jesus needs to pick his battles better. He is very brave but doesn't need to be at times and a danger to himself when trying too hard.

Poorest game I have seen this season from Bernardo.

Out of the 4 teams we can draw they are certainly the ones i would rather avoid.

I’ll put it another way: would prefer to avoid Athletico in the draw. Would you chose to play the strongest second placed team?

I am a naive, innocent, Happy Clapper City fan and I believe we can beat any team at any time, and especially in February when I trust all our squad will be fit, the warmer weather is on its way and I am wearing my lucky City watch!

Fingers crossed pal, thats all we can hope for really.

Stones looked awful at RB (not his fault) and I think it’s time to give up on the Zinchenko LB experiment. Wrong side of his man often and sometimes no recollection that a man was behind him.

Disappointed with walker again. Sloppy, casual and not playing anywhere near last seasons level.

Lots of pluses to. Ederson with 2 fantastic saves, Gündogan proving that he can do a job as the DM in some days, jesus all round game good (just needs a goal) and Sane on fire.
