For Bird watching Id recommend a pair with a zoom, doubling the magnification when a rare species is spotted
 
nip into a John Lewis just to see what suits. " Eye-friendly" ( important for extended use) can vary, as a rough guide, the lens next to the eye should be as big as your pupil. Lots of gen on-line but you can't beat handling the goods. The water-proof and rugged RSPB ones do the job as intended, wide field of vision means finding the target quickly, whereas the astronomy ones are virtually useless for tracking anything fast-moving. I've been using an ex-us military pair for over twenty years, not sure where you'd find them nowadays. Sounds a bit odd, but the price of compact video-cams has fallen drastically, Hi-def 70x optical zoom is common, and shops like cashgenerator have loads. Let us know what you decide on ...
