Phil Collins

Phil will always be the man who wrecked genesis, turning them into a pop group, after getting rid of Peter Gabriel, when Peter was with them they were pretty awesome.

A bit harsh, nimrod.
They were always a songwriting collective, and from Genesis (83 album) all songs were credited as Banks/Collins/Rutherford.
BUT, and it's a big but, every Genesis fan worth his salt, knows that Genesis is Tony Banks' band. Always has been. Always will be.
Collins himself alludes to this, in the 1991 documentary "No Admittance", where he says "I'm still playing third in line, in this band".

Yes, they did go TOO poppy, but times change. They'd properly broken America by 1980, and they're not mad keen on the prog stuff, so the three of them "adapted" their sound. Not for the better, but hey-ho.

Gabriel wasn't "got rid of". I just think he got pissed off with Banks' controlling the band, so he jumped ship. Very, very sad. That period of Foxtrot/SEBTP/TLLDOB is unsurpassed, for me.

Getting back to Collins, I can understand the resentment. Ubiquitous from 1980 (the brilliant Duke) , to pretty much the mid 90's
(the average Both Sides), he was everywhere, and people got pissed off. BUT, there were many moments of quality.
In The Air Tonight, in fact, most of Face Value.
The West Side/ Do You Know, Do You Care/I Don't Care Anymore
Some great drum fills on "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The catchiness of No Jacket Required
The Drum Duet with Chester Thompson on the Invisible Touch tour, is a thing of genius.
Add to this, a couple of collaborations. Frida's "There's Something Going On", and "The quiet's too loud" with Lamont Dozier.

The Yanks LOVE him, whether black or white. But us British have a problem with those who get too successful.

Yes, he's an annoying fucker. But (at times) he's an awesome annoying fucker.

I actually preferred the 1st one on the Trespass album (John Mayhew)

I know what you mean, although it was actually Banks who was mostly responsible for Gabriel quitting; it had nothing to do with Collins.
When Gabriel first left they weren’t pop - what caused that was when Hackett left as well. Although they still had some dodgy tunes back then too (More Fool Me, Your Own Special Way for starters)

Hadn’t seen this when I just posted, but I agree. Take Me Home has Gabriel on, and Collins contribution to Melt is well acknowledged

And of course, the invention of the "gated reverb" which was EVERYWHERE from that point, onwards.

MELT remains in my Top 10 albums of all time (bar the Godawful Biko) , and is much better than So, but that's the album which PG gets most kudos for

Yep, love all of those first 5 albums he did. In fact the one he released in 82 is pretty underrated I’d say. Rhythm of the Heat etc, some intense tracks on there. I remember seeing both bands within a few days of each other and it has to be said Gabriel sounded a bit ragged live. Stuff like Games Without Frontiers & some of the tracks off So he couldn’t really reproduce live. Whereas Genesis, different story...

Huh?

I do not understand at all where you're coming from.

Collins looked like crap according to numerous press articles.

Fans of his are concerned for his well-being.

How does understandable fan concern have anything at all to do with some sort of Hitler conspiracy?
Deffo looked crap .. bit like Jim Bowen RIP ... He really looked poorly as my mum would say

Was this at the Mission in Green Meadows? My brother lives across the road, he couldn’t be arsed going but his wife did. He said there was a number of accidents, due to the ‘bowl’
Was Napier .. I'm not local .. but plenty of broken ankles and was a shit venue . If go again but be better geared up

How can you not enjoy

Harold the Barrel
from Nursery Cryme

A well-known bognor restaurant-owner disappeared
Early this morning
Last seen in a mouse-brown overcoat
Suitably camouflaged
They saw him catch a train

"Father of three its disgusting"
"Such a horrible thing to do"
Harold the barrel cut off his toes and he served them all for tea
"Can't go far", "he can't go far"
"Hasn't got a leg to stand on"
"He can't go far"

I'm standing in a doorway on the main square
Tension is mounting
There's a restless crowd of angry people
"More than we've ever seen
Had to tighten up security"

Over to the scene at the town hall
The lord mayor's ready to speak
"Man of suspicion, you can't last long
The British public is on our side"
"Can't last long", "you can't last long"
"Said you couldn't trust him, his brother was just the same"
"You can't last long"

If I was many miles from here
I'd be sailing in an open boat on the sea
Instead I'm on this window ledge
With the whole world below

Up at the window
Look at the window
"We can help you"
"We can help you"
"We're all your friends
If you come on down and talk to us son"
You must be joking
Take a running jump

The crowd was getting stronger and our harold
Getting weaker
Forwards, backwards, swaying side to side
Fearing the very worst
They called his mother to the sight
Upon the ledge beside him
His mother made a last request
"Come off the ledge,
If your father were alive, he'd be very, very, very upset
"Just can't jump, you just can't jump"
"Your shirt's all dirty
There's a man here from the BBC"
"You just can't jump"
"We can help you"
"We can help you"
"We're all your friends,
If you come on down and talk to us Harry"

You must be joking
Take a running jump

I will listen to that one day.

They were, but I think Steve Hackett was the heart of Genesis rather than PG. 'A Trick of the Tail' and 'Wind and Wuthering" were recognisable as Genesis albums. It was when Steve left they went to hell in a handbasket. If you listen to Steve's solo albums, old genesis is still alive and well.

Though I do like some of the later stuff, the departure of Steve Hackett was really it for me too with Genesis, never quite the same. Peter Gabriel’s departure was bad enough but the loss of Hackett’s guitar ... . I also loved Gabriel’s costumes and his ‘stories’ and in ‘73 was privileged to see the awesome (and famously recorded) live performance of ‘Supper’s Ready’ at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester.

“If you go down to Willow Farm,
to look for butterflies, flutterbyes, gutterflies
Open your eyes, it's full of surprise, everyone lies,
like the fox on the rocks,
and the musical box.
Oh, there's Mum & Dad, and good and bad,
and everyone's happy to be here.”

It’s worth at least one listen. Honest.

I was joking. I will listen to it after I have had my rejuvenating coffee. Someone forced me to drink a lot of red wine last night, then two double gins. The abuse I endure is something else, fucking shocking.

I’m just too nice, always have been.

Nice one. I saw him on the lamb lies down tour. He wasn’t exactly a convincing teenage Puerto Rican rebel mind you! Have seen Steve Hackett in Glasgow the last couple of years and have tickets for his gig in September. He is still extremely bloody good.

In the same place mate. Guinness, white wine, then a bottle of minervois. Bloody Brexit.
Still, Scotland Ireland this afternoon so hair of the dog and all that.

I've got the last 3 Hackett CDs (but not the brand new one, yet), and they're good, as well as his first 5 solo efforts (Spectral Mornings and Defector are superb).
I saw him live in 2010, and he was fantastic. However, I can't bring myself to watch him again, as that singer he has, is the dictionary definition of the word twat

I swear by the hair of the dog miracle cure. The only problem is tomorrow I will be lying on the couch looking like I’ve hust been taken out by a sniper. After I survived going through a Thresher machine. Listened to the song and didn’t hate it, which is progress, or the hangover, one of the two.

Im glad we have Magicpole to post honest, sensible and indeed useful information on this 'Tribute to Dead Phil' thread. I am getting a bit fed up with all these disrespectful buggers going on about some bloke who apparently didn't wear a jacket. So what ? Magic was pissed, that's what is relevant here.

The track ‘Hoping Love Will Last’, on ‘Please Don’t Touch’ and featuring Randy Crawford on vocals - is a thing of beauty.

maybe the hangover - resistances are low!
