what a game of football last night

first thing first ?? how bad was the pitch and we knocked and moaned at newport pitch ?? but we are talking about a top german team and a world cup stadium and champions league club, right the game and is there any point picking out major point like VAR or the officials and will uefa do something about VAR not working in the stadium in a big game in the last 16 of the golden pot ??? ref watch 3/10 VAR watch 0/10

when you see things like last night you have to question UEFA and the officials, would barca madrid united munich get done over like manchester city in europe, and this is where our major problem lay in europe ?? and i really think the players feel the same and lose control and our plans go out of the window, pep even said in the after match interview that we are not ready to take on the big games in europe

funny thing is that the 2.3 away win does not feel like a very big win ?? and maybe the team did not click or play for 90 minutes or down to 10 men for 30 minutes and score 2 goals, but we dug very very deep last night and to come home with 3 away goals and the win will be the making of this team

loved pep in the after match interview cool as fuck, never once moaned BUT we all know he was boiling over inside even said loves VAR and both pens was right hahahaha, pep is a great manager and knows his onions and saying we are not ready is a major bluff to keep the players on their feet and grounded and will get more out of them in training and a safety net if we don't reach the heights this season

Interesting to see Peps views on the decisions.

He says both were penalties.

I have to agree with him in the respect that Fernadinho did commit a foul and the decision was correct. The fact you see similar not given countless times is part of the reason VAR is needed.

The first one is more debatable. Firstly I think it should have been a penalty and the rules should be altered to clarify such in the event of a ball hitting an arm or hand when a shot is on target a penalty should be given. As the current rules stand it was in my view harsh and once again you will often see them not given. The yellow card for such a penalty is harsh in the extreme and of course leaves a player somewhat unjustly a mistake away from a red card as illustrated last night.

There would have been hell up if those penalties were not given in our favour certainly.

The VAR system needs improving and quickly no question because that last night was farcical and to the onlooker simply made the officials look stupid.

Peps remarks on us not being ready for the latter stages surely refer to the fact we are still prone to give poor goals away and the Fernandinho penalty was poor on his part, and the fact that we should have gone there last night and killed the tie off stone dead. As it happens whilst it would take a brave man to bet on Schalke progressing you cannot say the tie is quite done and dusted.

All in all it was not a great performance against a distinctly average side. Infact bordering on a poor performance. Of course what is encouraging is that to win leagues and cups you generally have to be able to summon up a win even when you have a stinker and City did that last night. Had that performance come against one of the main contenders you have to think could we have done the same and would we still be in the tie, perhaps those are along the lines of what Peps thoughts are on the current state of play.
I concur, good post.

Wow what a game last night could of gone either way but we did it in the end and what great substituteions from Pep. Destined for Leroy to put that one in the top bin and Raheem great finish. Still be a tough home leg but hopefully we will have enough to finish them off.

Schalke managed 0 shots on target from open play (The shot that turned into the penalty was blocked so it's not counted in the stats). We had 70% possession away from home. We won the game with 10 men.

That doesn't happen with players performing badly, or Pep getting things wrong. This was a 3-0 game interrupted by 2 penalties and a red card.

People seem desperate to find reasons why this was a bad game from us - X played out of position or Y wasn't good enough - but it was a great performance only made competitive by 2 bad decisions by the referees and 1 50/50.

Maybe perspective is involved here. When people refer to a bad performance it maybe by the standards we have set ourselves. Perhaps by the standards almost certainly required to win this particular competition.

On that basis I maintain last night was below par. Nobody played shite in the normal sense of the word. Nobody was outstanding and things that normally come off didnt last night. Aguero, Sterling, Bernado, all ran their bollocks off but it just didnt quite happen for them. Fernandinho giving a silly penalty away. Even Ederson facing two penalties you would back to find a way of stopping one of them.

So perhaps when people are not gushing over a performance such as last nights they are rightly judging by a different set of parameters and rightly so given the quality of the team we have and the targets that team and its manager have set themselves.

Good comeback, fully deserved the win. They only had 2 shots on Target, the two penalties.

Two problems we have at the minute:-
1. We don't have a left back. Means losing Fern from midfield which has its consequences and also we lose our attacking threat from left back also as Laporte is a natural at it.
2. KDB hasn't hit the heights yet. He seems to be struggling but he is always going to play to try and play his way back into form. With KDB always going to play and Bernardo always going to play, it means one of Sterling/Sane is going to miss out. In my opinion we are more threatening when Sane & Sterling both play. Bernardo & Fernandinho plus one of David Silva or KDB would be my preferred midfield 3 at the minute.

for me 1st penalty was a penalty...otta made it look far to obvious imo..second penalty...no need to discuss and the sending off was correct. the wait for the 1st penalty was ridiculous and makes var a tad farcical....but we won and thats all we needed!!!!

Maybe we did the underestimating trick again thinking we could just turn up and win ala Newcastle. No German side is ever going to be a pushover and hopefully we've learnt a lot from this for the second leg. Hard to pick a motm as nobody stood out, probably Sterling?. Sergio, Kdb, Otamendi not at the races, thank god for Leroy.

We were playing away, on a pitch that looked like the football match from Kes, against a bunch of hoofers with all the finesse and physicality of a Colin Wanker team, with a Betamax VAR and a referee out of his depth, we conceded two penalties and had a man sent off.

And we still won 3-2

If we were scousers we'd be writing poems about it, though I'm struggling to find a rhyme for Gelsenkirchen.

We were cruising until we got cheated.

MOTM was B Silva for me.

The lad is world class.

Not after Raheem's goal and the final whistle. They all said the right words, but the atmosphere was as flat as a witch's tit. You could hear the disappointment in their voices. Pathetic.

Although Jermaine Jenas actually scoffed at Walton and his pathetic interpretation of the penalties. You could see the anger in his eyes and just wanting to say “ you’re a Fcuking joke”

Whether we would or wouldn't is irrelevant. VAR is used to overturn decisions where there has been a clear and obvious error.

If the on-field ref gives a corner, as he did last night, VAR should not overturn, because it wasn't a clear and obvious error.

If the on-field ref had given a penalty, VAR should not overturn, because it wouldn't have been a clear and obvious error.

Nobody in the World of football thinks VAR is going to solve everything but if it is implemented and used as agreed, most football fans will come to terms with it and its flaws. However if, as last night, VAR is used where the rules that UEFA have set out, are completely ignored, the debate will rage on.

You've nailed it there, whether it was a penalty or not is definitiely debatable BUT the ref didn't give it so there's no way it should have been overturned. Fucking shambles that decision last night.

they could of just copied rugbys take on var, it actually enhances the game
Agreed, I watch a lot of rugby and the var system is over used in my opinion. Also, just as they tried last night with our goal, how far back does the review go, that is still a grey area even after a few years of review.

If the ref couldn't view VAR then why not just go to one of the benches who had a tablet showing the replays.

Fucking ridiculous last night it stopped the flow of the game, to Schalke benefit

Leroy's free kick went down well on RAWK...

c*nt Sane

They weren't too happy with Sterling either...

Oh ffs, 3-2 more bollockology defending by Schalke

fuck off Schalke, useless c*nts...

Looked a foul by Sterling the little c*nt.

Citys players love acting the c*nt, so smug about it as well
