New breed of away fan

Always been the case to a certain extent and I think most of us don't go for the football alone, but there does seem to be new 'type' of young city fan you see at away games, many not brought up on City and dont live in Manchester but have just decided that's how they want to spend their weekends. Remember seeing some at arsenal away, all from somewhere like swindon and no city connection at all but it was a just an excuse to go and get pissed with their mates somewhere different. Saw a group from the midlands somewhere another time. Obviously it's a minority but just something I've noticed since the success. And I don't just mean blues from elsewhere in UK who have chose to support city for whatever reason, we've always had those, I mean groups who are going for the away day specifically rather than for City. Not suggesting it's the hem causing trouble, just an observation

I have only ever gone for the football.

An extension of that was all the professional drinkers that used to go to Maine Road before all day opening came in (in 1988) and stand at the bar all game drinking. Some of them had season tickets and never watched a single kick all season. That's dedication for you!

Yeah, it's hardly a new phenomenon. I'd argue that it was more prevalent when we were dogshit as well. Personally, it's never just been about the football for me because if it was we'd have all jacked it in years ago when we were tumbling towards oblivion. It's also a social thing for me, and let's be honest when it comes to European away trips in particular the football is only a small, albeit important, part of it. That's not to say everyone should get totally wasted but many fans will want to make something of the trip when they're out there - that could be bouncing around in the streets as many were in Dusseldorf the other night, or doing something a bit more cultured like taking in a bit of sightseeing and eating out in nice restaurants which is more to the liking of posh twats like yourself ;)

It's not just at away games, sadly, or young lads.

The derby game last year, there was a young foreign couple who were queuing at half-time to get into the 93:20 bar who were wearing half and half scarves (a different debate)

It was shameful to watch as two fat 50 somethings attacked the lad, dragged the scarf off his neck and called him Munich this and that. His girlfriend looked petrified and our kid was ready to go and drop these two clowns, before the stewards moved in.

The irony was, they were actually City fans visiting for the first time. I wonder if they ever came back?

Now that is shit, fucking ridiculous that kind of stuff

That’s also been the case going back decades.

When we were shit and we were either getting dicked or the game was boring, we had blokes who used to just go down to the concourse at half time and buy so many pints they’d stay there well into the second half or even go back to the pub and wait for everyone else to get there after the game.

One of my Dad’s mates used to do it all the time in the late 80s. You’d think “where’s he gone?” then you’d go back to the Bee Hive after the game and he’d be four pints in back at the pub. As a young kid at the time, City mad, I used to think that was really weird.

Not arsed about the game, not arsed about City, not arsed about football full stop, just the day out and escapism from normal life.

Absolutely, there's always been blokes who go to the match more for the craic than for the football.
During Stuart Pearce's stewardship it was only the prospect of a load of Guinness in the Osborne and Gardeners, then on to town (Rosie's anyone?) that kept me going.

How much is most? Have you got a particular percentage in mind? 60%? 70% 80%? There's been enough posts on this thread from older fans saying they've seen plenty of shitty behaviour from older fans too. I'll tell you for now that I've seen as much, if not more trouble, down the years from fans over the age of 25 than under 25.

I'll also point out that fan behaviour these days is miles better than it was in the 70's and 80's, yet the way some people go on you'd be forgiven for thinking that back in their day everyone was perfectly behaved and no-one ever sang about Munich, but the reality is that it was completely the opposite.

Have a look at the graph at the bottom of this web page...

Ive no problem with people using football as an escape - it’s been mine for years - but people can take that escapism way too far. Computer games were another escape for me, I could just sink into an alternate reality and forget everything for a while, where you can do whatever you want. But with football, it’s like some people think laws no longer apply once it’s match day. Lawlessness and thuggery are the order of the day. That is an issue with society in general that’s then spilling into football, rather than a new breed of fan.

You don't enjoy anything else about the day?

Just seeing my team play and hopefully win. That's what it's always been about for me. I grew up less than 20 yards away from the main entrance at Maine Road. There was less sense of occasion around visiting a stadium I played in and around every day.

Now I have my own 11-year-old, we sit in crawling traffic for a 10-mile journey and there's nothing enjoyable about that, unless we want to enjoy the delights of the Metro!

Yes, I'm well known for my museum excursions on euro away trips!

Went to the toilet during the second half on Wednesday
About one hundred fans, from the smaller v/w section stood around watching the game on tv, chatting and having a beer.

so what? what harm are they doing?

The issue is paying to support your club and travelling to away games (here or in Europe) and being intimidated or threatened of your own fans who snarl ,squabble and throw beer at other city fans.

We are all City fans at the end of the day but there is definitely a group within a group at these games nowadays and its not pleasant - outside of the game we can stay away inside the ground its a bit more difficult.

Where did I say they were doing any harm?
I was responding to someone who said they only go to watch the match, everyone’s different.

Personally I think it’s a bit ridiculous to pay all that money, travel all that way and then watch it on the TV on the concourse.
But they’ve paid they’re money they can do as they please.

As we don’t seem to have a thread about this I thought I’d start one
The conduct of our younger support is pathetic at the moment , not all but a large percentage. In Germany these last couple of days all they wanted to do was get pissed and goad others either fellow blues or Germans. The songs on the bus back to the train station after the game were all Munich this and Munich that , are they actually aware of who died that day ??
At the ground well at least in our section anyway all they were interested in was getting even more drunk and throwing beer over everyone. When challenged they then tried goading us into a fight all very brave picking on some who is disabled .At one point the idiot behind deliberately poured his beer over one of our party then kept on at him to F**k off if he didn’t like it. One of them even fell asleep during the game .
I can see this happening yet again in the pubs around Wembley again on Sunday and the reason we won’t venture down that way until near ko time. But we are lucky as these are the fans the club want to get on board as they bring atmosphere to the games and intend giving them a separate allocation .
But then maybe it isn’t them at all and it’s just our fault for being as we were called on Wednesday ‘f**king old c**nts’!!

Certainly heard more stuff to do with Munich back in the day, not recently.

Saying that the last away game i went to was the Fa Cup semi vs Arsenal.

Still pissed some twat set off blue flares outside the pub, throwing beer and ruined my coat.

dickheads will always behave like dickheads because they are dickheads. Coke and ale just makes them bigger dickheads

Nail on head.

It’s not an age thing I don’t think as some of the worst are those sad ****s in their 40’s who are still taking drugs and generally behaving like pricks.

Not sure about this throwing beer around though. What the fuck is that all about? I don’t have to be sober to not like it, I don’t like it when I’m pissed either. It’s fucking ridiculous.
