Downing Street concedes that police numbers are relevant in the fight against violent crime

Looks like she has had to perform a forced U-turn a bit embarrassing really.

They were just saying on the radio that this statement had very much a Sarah Huckbery Sanders feel to it. Says it all really

Worst PM and worst government I can remember. I've spent most of my life understanding that lots of politicians are horrible, self serving shits but at the same time I have always had a sense that when push comes to shove they are the grown ups and that they generally know what they're doing. I look at May and her current cabinet and think they are absolute fools. This is not the usual thing of disagreeing with their ideology, it genuinely feels like we are currently being governed by people who haven't a fucking clue what they are doing. It's actually quite scary.

You get used to it.

Complicit in a conspiracy. Now wonder the media are attacking Labour so veciforously...

Do you mind me asking how old you are, mate?

Thought so, not much different to me. So the current crop of politicians is actually the generation you went to school with. Their life experiences etc will mirror many of your own. There is no mystique about them. For people of our sort of age, the generation of politicians that went through the war, say, have something in their background that is beyond our understanding. This current mob is not one you look at and think ‘I don’t understand that but I have faith they do because they have experiences that go beyond my own’ you look at them and think ‘they are clueless wankers’. You feel confident in your own assessment because you have known clueless wankers like this lot all your life, and this shower fits very neatly into that category. You have also known smart people all your life and they don’t tick any of those boxes.

Yep that just about sums it up.

Haha. I’m 49 and feel the same. “all politicians are wankers” is a trite sentiment. But I’ve been shocked to realise that a high proportion of them are not smart or even informed. The brightest people in this country are not in politics. That’s has become obvious and it’s very frightening.

To look at it from a different perspective why would any intelligent, articulate and sensible person want to go into politics nowadays? No private life, do anything remotely "edgy" and the media, both mainstream and social, would be all over you like a rash. Constant criticism and belittling, no sense that the public appreciate anything good you may do. Being close to or part of the decision-making process may be a buzz for some but I doubt it really compensates for all the shit that goes with it. It's hardly surprising that we end up with a bunch of thick-skinned no-marks who are in it for what they can take out rather than what they can put in.

Or to put it briefly, we tend to get the politicians we deserve.

Great book by Isabel Hardman on this. Well worth a read or listen

My current Tory MP is very active in terms of local causes and making people aware of events and charities etc but she is silent on peoples concerns for mainstream issues. She is a May ally who just sticks to Tory lines on basically everything. I think she has only spoken in Parliament a handful of times.

Despite us having a fairly average MP, she increased her vote at the last election and we are a marginal with a mix of poor and rich areas. This is a seat Labour should be winning.

Last time and next time Labour will put another Momentum clone forwards but the fact is only 20% of voters can even relate with Momentum. This is why our Tory MP increased her vote without really doing anything.

The Tories generally last time increased their vote which is incredible really. There is basically no opposition and that is because the local candidates exist only to spout the same old party lines rather than to say what they want to do for the area.

Happy Women's Day
