Swansea (QF) Post Match thread

The first post I made and we were 2-0 down and I honestly thought we weren’t getting out of it.
If you’re going to quote me. Get it correct.
I didn’t say ‘embarrassing’, I actually said ‘laughing stock’.
Sorry who was the laughing stock again?

I'd just like to give credit to Graham Potter. Having seen his interview on the pitch immediately after the game last night, and having just seen part of his post match press conference, he conducted himself very well. His side was on the rough end of certainly one decision yesterday (still not sure one way or the other about the penalty), but he didn't bleat or whinge about us and said we deserved the win (which is true, but it was still nice of him to say it). I can think of a manager of another Welsh team who would have spontaneously combusted after that game.

Totally agree Jim. Despite the gimp presenter on bt constantly pushing the 'wrong decisions' narrative, again, the manager was having none of it and showed real class in his post match interview.

All that fun thru yesterday evening, condensed into a few short hours...

Now have to wait almost a fortnight, unless Fulham join the party too...?

If "shocking" is battering a team for 45 minutes I'll take it, we could easily have scored 7 or 8 again.

Yeah.

We dominated the match from start to finish but conceded a needless penalty and then they scored a wonderful goal - although we made it too easy for them - but that was their two shots on target. Meanwhile we had a series of near misses, including goal line heroics from them.

Even allowing for a bit of good fortune, coming back from two down away from home is the only shock.

Mahrez’s performances continue to worry me.
He seems to be very predictable and is clearly lacking in confidence. His tracking and defensive work is definitely not up to Pep standards.
Pep has given him good game time but he has failed to make an impression in all but a few occasions.
I hope he doesn’t turn out to be a one season wonder but am beginning to suspect we may have bought a £70 million pup.
Sincerely hope I’m wrong.

I was surprised Foden didn't start. His substitute appearance against Schalke was remarkable. He would have had composure and energy levels to make a similar impact against Swansea.

Then strap yourself in for a mental schedule in April. Every game a cup final from here on in, let’s hope Pep can use the international break to recharge the batteries of Sergio and Dave and get Fernandinho and De Bruyne back into the fold.

The second bit is true, the first isn't.
It is not 1973. No longer is getting to the ball with a tackle enough to NOT give a foul. According to referee guidence notes and videos, the tackle has to disposess a player. If the the player is not dispossed and the tackle follow through subsequently brings down the player it is a foul and to disposses the player the attacker would have to change direction, pace or check stride to recover posession. If non of that is apparent it is a foul.
Once he made contact with ball it was no longer in sterlings possession he changed the direction of the ball and therefore sterling would have to change his direction and pace to recover it. Either way if it was given against us I would be ragin it's as soft as they come I'm of the opinion he got enough of the ball. As I have said before I'm sure we would have won the game without it.

We were certainly shy of putting the chances away and believe if they had VAR, it would certainly have seen us out. Their penalty was fair enough, but the dive to go with it was ridiculous. We rarely get those. Their second was a great sweeping move similar to us. Bernardo was amazing yet again. Our penalty was one of those that had it been given against us, we would be furious, but we have had enough go against anyway. Our 3rd would have been ruled offside by VAR, it wouldn’t matter that the defender had his hands on Kuns neck, pushing him down.
All in all, this has to be one of the greatest FA cup escapes, even though we dominated possession, their 11 man white wall, did give us chances, but as usual, we squandered them, or we would have been out of sight.
Don’t fancy Wolves in the Semi, they look like they’re on a mission.
"...certainly have seen us out...". Really? Seriously?

You’ve lost me. City win, tick. Utd lose, tick. And then something irrelevant about the Grand Slam? You may as well say City win, Utd lose and I found a packet of biscuits I had forgot about in the cupboard. No one cares about rugby - just a load of fat blokes who are shit at football

Anger management required

It is sometimes noticeable that championship sides play a slightly different type of game to premier sides, they play slightly more body on the line football .We saw yesterday how they blocked the ball any way they could, you don't see that so often in the matches we play regularly, the big 6 for instance will try to stand off rather than get stuck in and hence we thread passes through them resulting in fantastic football.
The higher the level the less physical contact and that is why relegated teams have to adapt when they go down and vice versa when they come up.
Swans did well yesterday and even if the pen wasn't given we would have found a goal to level, courageous as they were the tanks were empty and extra time would have been a long 30 minutes for them.
Thanks Swansea for making a game of it and I for one enjoyed it - turned out nice again

I watched it on a stream and not watched it back and although Delph was a dick for trying the tackle did he actually catch their player? Oh and not read through all the posts so apologies if that’s been discussed.

Yes nailed on penalty if a bit acrobatic

Odd tempo to the game in the first half and not sure whether players think that they can take a few minutes rest during game then step up if required. We should have scored a couple in first half but creditvto Swansea for the way they want to play the game. Take note other managers. Subs really made a difference and arguably had they have all started then maybe we would have seen a different game. Mahrez continues to frustrate, great first touch but isn’t putting in a shift defensively but it’s his first season with us. Sane can be unplayable but sometimes, like yesterday, sulks a little. Delph may be sold this summer although giving him the benefit of the doubt as he may be rusty. When all is said and done though history will show we won the game despite not being at our best and having some luck.
