Mindgeek, one of the adult industry's biggest players, has developed an online system of its own called AgeID, which it hopes will be widely adopted. It involves adults having to upload scans of their passports or driving licences, which are then verified by a third-party.

Definitely not an embarrassing data leak waiting to happen.

High street stores and newsagents will also sell separate age-verification cards to adults after carrying out face-to-face checks, according to the government.

Unfortunately more and more invasive control of the Internet will get worse before it gets better. "Think of the children!!", but all the kids will figure out how to bypass it on the first day anyway.

How does uploading a passport prove that you're over a certain age? It's not as if there aren't thousands of pictures of people's passports online already that you could easily download. I really don't see how there's any problem with the current system. The person paying for the internet (who by definition should be over 18) decides if they want to block or allow porn. I don't see how this system is going to be any more effective than that, other than creating another massive hackable database of people's details.

very conflicted set of laws, on the one had they add this, on the other they have massivley loosened what is termed obscene. so its no legal to download harder/darker porn but you have to prove your 18 to do it?

Think it is to do with those shops you can take stuff to. Like a television or some gold item. The shop assistant assesses your item and then gives you some money for it. Not sure how it works online though and we spell it PAWN here in England...
