Mindgeek, one of the adult industry's biggest players, has developed an online system of its own called AgeID, which it hopes will be widely adopted. It involves adults having to upload scans of their passports or driving licences, which are then verified by a third-party.

Definitely not an embarrassing data leak waiting to happen.

High street stores and newsagents will also sell separate age-verification cards to adults after carrying out face-to-face checks, according to the government.

"Yes love, just popping to the shops for my porn pass, do we need milk?".

Unfortunately more and more invasive control of the Internet will get worse before it gets better. "Think of the children!!", but all the kids will figure out how to bypass it on the first day anyway.

As I understand it, only content producers will be affected, not aggregators, so sites like xvideos wouldn't be covered.

If this is the case, what a complete and utter waste of time. In fact, scrub the "if this is the case". Let's just go with, what a complete and utter waste of time.

So the people who actually make it will get screwed (no pun intended) while the people who steal it won't be affected. Genius.

This news is making me a bit anxious!

Porn has been in my life silence the age of about 10. Wank mags on top of my dad’s wardrobe, the odd one found on a park. Betamax, DVD, Internet.....

Uploading a passport on a porn site?

How does uploading a passport prove that you're over a certain age? It's not as if there aren't thousands of pictures of people's passports online already that you could easily download. I really don't see how there's any problem with the current system. The person paying for the internet (who by definition should be over 18) decides if they want to block or allow porn. I don't see how this system is going to be any more effective than that, other than creating another massive hackable database of people's details.
