Champions League Semi Finals 30th April/1st May

A lot of frustration that Spurs and not us are in the semi. But keep in mind, that means we would have played at Burnley on Sat in diabolical weather. We might have dropped points.

I think all's for the best. Let's win the league, watch the scousers squirm and cry over the summer, then go again next season for the league/CL double.

Agree. League priority but definitely opportunity missed for CL as bar VAR and some mistakes and I think we would have won it.

Come on folks...

I do not think it is right to call Dele Alli an "average" player.

To my mind he only just makes it as a "player"... only just.

JJ

Oh, he's a 'player' alright. So say the girls....allegedly. ;)

ajax is really good moving forward with pace right through the middle, they play some fantastic football at times,no doubt. That said, their defense is suspect at best, they keep conceding wide open headers, im surprised teams havent been able to capitalize more on it.

open tie still, hopefully ajax closes it out at home

Nah we would have beaten them... once Poch realised his system error they looked blunt. If only he had set up like that against us... I would fancy Silva, Bernardo and Sterling playing between the lines vs Wanyama to score 3 goals in that opening 20 mins.. it was suicidal.. unfortunately Poch would not be silly enough to do that against us.... just Ajax.

After the break, Tottenham came out and gave it a good go, but the plain fact is that for all their huffing and puffing I don't remember the Ajax keeper having a single serious save to make in the second half. Ajax attacked very well in the first half, and then defended stubbornly in the second. They didn't have to do anything else. If anyone could have scored, it was them, with Lloris totally beaten and only the woodwork saving them from 2-0. They look the real deal to me, in all sectors of the park. We might have beaten them. But I'm just not sure.

Notice when free kick taken before whistle was blown no yellow card. Kev got a yellow for the exact same offence why ?

I really just cannot believe we got knocked out of this by fucking Spurs.

They are dogshit.

An over cautious first leg approach, a missed penalty, four defensive mistakes and two goalkeeping errors, that's why we are out. I guess you could add the VAR handball decision into the mix as well. In spite of all that we almost pulled it off but we contributed hugely to our own downfall.

Ajax play a bit like us but are more ready to throw it into the box than we are. Up until their goal they were very good - quick and sharp and playing on the front foot. Spurs must be one of the most frustrating teams to watch every week - they can be excellent one week then limp the next.

I feel like Raheem would have loved to play against Ajax and got lots of joy. My only concern would have been gundo or ferna get pounced upon. You'd need calm heads at centre back

Please elaborate on the rules, since I've obviously misunderstood them.

Confusion is mounting, but not in regard to the difference in refereeing..

The right back was deeper than the centre half’s and played the Ajax player in the middle onside...!! The other Ajax player not interfering with play

You lot play more parked buses than we did during that first year from 08-09, I am not debating it but that's also English football. In Spain, many opponents tried to attack and even in CL they initially tried to attack as well but after '09 few had the courage to play an open game. As I say, that term got coined from Mourinho's tactics against Barcelona

But there's no question for me it's more about the absurdity of playing 4 competitions (One of FA or Carabao has to go) and the other is simply bad luck with untimely key injuries that prevented you guys from really maintaining any sort of rhythm. The lack of attacking/overlapping fullbacks is glaringly absent from a Pep coached team - that's why I don't buy the Mendy rumours, they have to fortify at FB(s)
You make an interesting point about overlapping full backs. Mancini and Pellegrini both used overlapping full backs but Pep has used wingers who stick very close to the touch lines, keeping the pitch as wide as possible. There is no room for overlapping full backs and a lot of times when it has happened you have seen the wingers and the full backs getting in each other’s way. Pep appears to prefer his full backs to come inside when we are on the attack and wants his wingers to drop back when we are defending. Of course, with Pep in charge, the system is completely fluid and changes all the time.

I have no idea what the Club’s plans are for Mendy. We paid a lot of money for him so must believe in his ability. If he can stay fit there should be no reason why he and Zinchenko can’t cover the full back role. However, that’s a big ‘if’. In two years he has played a handful of games.

Nah we would have beaten them. They are us light. Much like the great Peps Barca compared to say a reasonable Wenger Arsenal team.. you never give a team of interchangeable midfield and “false” strikers a large portion of space to showcase their talents in front of a narrow back 3 set of CB’s.. Poch would never have dreamt of doing that against us.

Very pleased. Well done Ajax.

Pleased but frustrating. I think we would have won it if either VAR had not been introduced or done it’s job.. either or...

Oh well let’s win the league as CL was my second ambition behind the important one.

Good side. Thought they defended well and showed no fear. Certainly played better than we did at the new WHL.
